Description Cali (in Foster)
Cali
The interviewer (IL) asked me to speak a little louder during my interview. In the end, I chose not to share any information about myself. Just pretend you've spent your life in solitary confinement, and you will know why I'm so reluctant. I have spent all my life in my owner's garage. I am 9-years-old. That is a whole lot of alone time. I am not used to being with people. Talking about myself is even harder. I am a fairly petite, DSH, Tortoiseshell girl who was never spayed. But since I had never been around other cats, I had no fear of having a litter. I am honestly scared to death of people and dogs. Not to brag, but I am a superior mouser! My owner developed Alzheimer's, and that is why I was brought to the HSHC on December 27. Coming to the shelter has been terrifying. On January 30, I was sent to live in a foster home. My life has improved 100%. My foster parents (FP) have been patient and gentle with me. I have made a lot of progress. Even though my attempts to convince them to feed me only Temptations Cat Treats have failed, I am eating, drinking, and using the litter box flawlessly. I am still frightened of the new place and humans. However, I no longer dash away to a hiding spot when they come into the room. Recently, I was encouraged to explore a room other than my own. That was exhilarating. So far, I am comfortable with exactly three pets using a back scratcher before letting them know I'm done with a hiss. FM feels really good about the progress I am making. So am I. I know I have many more opportunities to improve my social skills and find a forever home. The best approach with me is slow and steady. Playing with interactive toys, enrichment toys, calming aids, and yummy treats with my humans will help me build trust and improve my confidence. Paws crossed! 3-13-26

Not Quite Ready To Adopt?

You can make an immeasurable impact by opening your home and your heart to an animal in need. Fostering is a great opportunity to introduce a pet into your home without making a lifelong commitment. Many of our foster humans end up adopting their fostered animals, but many also choose to just provide the temporary shelter and love our animals need to get through a trying time.
