When the interviewer lady (IL) wrote my first interview, my name was Esme, and I had transferred to HSHC from Muncie in 2023 at age 1, hoping to be adopted. On March 14, 2023, I went home with my new owner and got a new name. I lived with her for three years before developing a seizure disorder. Now, at 4 years, 6 months old, I take medication for my seizures. I was surrendered back to HSHC on March 7, 2026, as my owner felt it was not a good fit. A week later, I moved into a foster home, where things have gone well. My seizures changed my personality from affectionate and outgoing to reserved, cautious, and less cuddly, but my foster mom (FM) says I'm easy to care for and haven't had seizures in her care. She reports that I only growl to tell her when I don't like something-for example, being picked up or being dressed up in an Easter dress! But it's always just a growl, with no hissing, swatting, or biting. I got along fine with their cats, and I didn't seem to mind our dogs. My former owners reported that I was constantly hiding – but I don't see that. She wanders around the house quite confidently. She can get overstimulated and start pacing, but that's when I put her in her room, and she settles right down. I think a cat-savvy owner would appreciate her independence and attitude.
As of June 5, I returned to the shelter and have been living in the Roaming Room and the Catio. I continue to have no seizure activity. I enjoy interactive play with my people and being near them. I'm simply not a fan of physical affection. I explored the house, met the resident dogs, and easily took my medicine with my favorite food. FM says I'm misunderstood: no longer a lapcat, but an independent lady who'd thrive in a calm, gentle household with someone respecting my boundaries. HSHC recommends daily positive interaction, toys, calming aids, and treats to build my trust. Adopters should have patience and realistic expectations throughout my life. Not Quite Ready To Adopt?
You can make an immeasurable impact by opening your home and your heart to an animal in need. Fostering is a great opportunity to introduce a pet into your home without making a lifelong commitment. Many of our foster humans end up adopting their fostered animals, but many also choose to just provide the temporary shelter and love our animals need to get through a trying time.
