Reuben
I can't tell you how happy I am to have made it to the adoption floor! On April 11, I transferred from Indianapolis Animal Control and Services to the HSHC. I was pretty sick, and I knew I'd landed in the right spot. I went into their medical unit the day I arrived, and I was moved to the Adoptable Cattery on September 30. That is five months, nineteen days in Sick Bay. The hidden blessing with this circumstance is that I became a staff favorite kitty! I am an 8-year-old, DSH male cat, already neutered and house-trained. My coat is primarily white, with patches of brown tabby markings.
My ailments include a rather rare condition called Feline Plasma Cell Pododermatitis, aka "Pillow Foot". This caused my foot pads to become swollen and painful. My right foot had a severe abscess. I developed an upper respiratory infection and later, an inflammation of my gums, cheeks, tongue, and throat (stomatitis). All of these problems relate to the fact that I tested positive for the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV+). This virus is found ONLY in cats, and it can weaken my immune system. Not all FIV+ cats have pillow foot, stomatitis, or URI. I just happened to become susceptible to them. I have been treated and released from my medical stay.
I am feeling much improved and looking forward to a long, happy life with my forever family. As for my personality, I am a real Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner! All the staff who have cared for me have said I am a sweet-natured, friendly, outgoing, excellent boy. I have liked everyone I've ever met, including dogs and cats. Because I was behind the scenes for so long, the staff often let me out of my cage or apartment to roam around and socialize with everyone. The interviewer lady (IL) finally got to meet me, and she was flabbergasted to see me on the adoption floor. When she opened my door, I immediately approached her with some head butts and major purring. I figured she'd let me out and about, but with customers in the room, she couldn't. Aw shucks. I've had plenty of time to get used to the people at the shelter, but I will probably need a longer time to get used to my new home and family. Regular interactive play sessions with my new family will help me bond with them and learn to enjoy and trust them. I can't wait to meet my new "peeps"! 10-6-26

Not Quite Ready To Adopt?
You can make an immeasurable impact by opening your home and your heart to an animal in need. Fostering is a great opportunity to introduce a pet into your home without making a lifelong commitment. Many of our foster humans end up adopting their fostered animals, but many also choose to just provide the temporary shelter and love our animals need to get through a trying time.
