The interviewer lady (IL) told me to relax and do the best I can. I think I'm supposed to tell you about myself and what I was doing before I arrived at the HSHC as a stray cat. The thing is, I am naturally shy and hesitate to call attention to myself. I am a 2-year-old male with a short white-and-brown tabby coat. Before coming to the shelter, I've been on my own. I'm not used to people taking care of me, and it is scary. I have had no experience dealing with being touched or socialized. My first response has been to hiss, swat, or try to run away out of pure fear! I arrived with goopy eyes and unneutered. The medical staff addressed these issues, and on August 9, they sent me to PetSmart for adoption. But on September 6, I returned because of tummy troubles. I have gradually begun to understand that the people here only want to help me, keep me healthy, and find me a permanent loving home. The IL was very gentle with me and stood quietly by my apartment door while I watched her from my bed. I slowly got up and inched up to her hand for a sniff. After that, I let her pet me, which made me purr. I have learned that being petted is very pleasurable, so I let her keep rubbing my head and scratching my chin. After a while, she offered me my dish of wet food, and I started eating. The HSHC staff recommend that I be given plenty of time to settle into my new home. Interactive playtime with toys such as a wand with a toy on the end of a string, chasing laser pointers, and things I can chase and catch will help build a bond between us. Calming aids and yummy treats will also help me feel comfortable with you. I will accept you as my people if you promise to give me time and space. My paws are crossed! 9-15-26

Not Quite Ready To Adopt?
You can make an immeasurable impact by opening your home and your heart to an animal in need. Fostering is a great opportunity to introduce a pet into your home without making a lifelong commitment. Many of our foster humans end up adopting their fostered animals, but many also choose to just provide the temporary shelter and love our animals need to get through a trying time.
