Did you know that my name is Irish for "fair" or "white"? Me neither. Since I am mostly grey with some faint white stripes, it's a mystery as to how I got this name. I have lived with my owner for 4 years, and I am now 5-years-old. A family member gave me to her when I was a year old. I am already neutered, and I use my litter box faithfully. My owner is moving, and she surrendered me to the HSHC on June 19. So here is my side of the story. I have always loved playing with my owners, hanging out with them, and rubbing my body along their legs to show my happiness. But when it comes to physical affection like petting or cuddling, I am not a fan. Please don't think I don't like you just because I don't want to sit on your lap. I'm the first to admit that it takes me a long time to get used to changes. I find it very stressful, and I'm likely to hiss, swat, or try to run away if I feel "cornered". Going to the vet was scary, as was moving into the cattery. The kids in my home were 2, 5, and 9 years old, and I was terrified of them. On the other hand, the dog and cat in the home were my pals, and I would seek them out for playtime. On July 22, I moved into a Roaming Room, where I've felt comfortable and enjoyed all the windows and the multiple napping spots. The interviewer (IL) has tried several times to get me to talk with her, but to no avail. But yesterday, she sat down and pulled out an extendable back scratcher. I moseyed on over and sniffed it. She gave my head a little rub, and I decided this was just what I wanted. I allowed her to scratch me all over-head, neck, chin, back, rump, you name it- I enjoyed it. Even though my tail was swishing, I stayed next to her so that she wouldn't stop. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, I am not a grouchy fellow as long as you aren't trying too hard to interact. Interactive playtime with toys I can chase, pounce on, and catch will be just what I need to bond with you. I have had a mild case of conjunctivitis in my right eye, which made it squinty. But it's much better now. The HSHC staff will provide you with strategies to make my move to your home successful. I will need a lengthy introduction to the people, places, and pets in your home. Not Quite Ready To Adopt?
You can make an immeasurable impact by opening your home and your heart to an animal in need. Fostering is a great opportunity to introduce a pet into your home without making a lifelong commitment. Many of our foster humans end up adopting their fostered animals, but many also choose to just provide the temporary shelter and love our animals need to get through a trying time.
