The biggest challenge of being a stray cat is having no documentation, no written or verbal history. I cannot explain my previous life because I don't speak human and was focused on survival. When I was picked up and caged, I panicked. I had to be examined in a net because I was so scared and stressed. I admit it-I was a mess. They call me Rango. I am 4-years-old, a ruggedly handsome, 12.5-pound, orange and white DSH Tabby, now neutered, and beginning to accept the enormous change in my lifestyle. When I arrived at the HSHC on March 17, I had wounds near my eye, a bleeding right paw, and an irritated left ear. I had hair loss, scabs, flea dirt, and a tick removed from my chin. I also tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), a virus that only affects cats and weakens their immune system, making it harder to fight off infections. Even with FIV, with regular veterinary care, a healthy diet, and living indoors, I can still enjoy a long and happy life-even around non-FIV+ cats. Staff assumed I'd make the perfect barn cat: people-opposed and eager to hunt. I spent March 20 to May 7 in the cattery holding room, hiding from staff and volunteers, then got a serious URI and recovered in the Medical unit from May 26 to June 10. Sometime during all this, I started to feel differently about the humans who cared for me. I stopped hissing and swatting and began seeking attention, responding more confidently to interaction. It took me two months to change my opinion, so I will need more time than you might expect to adjust to my new home. I need a small, safe space where I can settle in without pressure. Stress is my least favorite emotion! Provide calming aids, such as pheromone diffusers and interactive toys, to help me develop my social skills. The interviewer lady (IL) has told me every time she sees me that I am exceedingly good-looking and that someone is bound to fall in love with me, my story, and my progress. Any takers? 6-12-26

Not Quite Ready To Adopt?
You can make an immeasurable impact by opening your home and your heart to an animal in need. Fostering is a great opportunity to introduce a pet into your home without making a lifelong commitment. Many of our foster humans end up adopting their fostered animals, but many also choose to just provide the temporary shelter and love our animals need to get through a trying time.
