Boogie (bonded To Malachi) In Foster
You must excuse us if we seem a little distracted or depressed. We have lived with our owner all our lives. We moved from Florida to Indiana in the spring, and we moved into the new apartment. I cannot tell you exactly what happened. But our owner passed away, and we were with her for two days before the apartment complex staff discovered us. Because no family was listed to contact, the staff cared for us until we moved to the HSHC. They would often see me, Boogie, but Malachi was always hidden away. Until she died, our owner had limited interaction with other people, which meant we also had very little chance to experience a new person trying to touch or pet us, feed us, or talk to us. We were both fearful of the changes we experienced. We reacted by freezing, trying to flee, and avoiding interaction with staff and volunteers. This is why we are considered under-socialized, and it will be important to give us a lengthy adjustment period when transitioning into a new home. Although I'm not sure if we are sister and brother, we are a bonded pair. This means that we must be adopted together. We provide each other with comfort, stability, and security. We are both 2-years-old, and already spayed/neutered. Boogie (that's me) is a lovely black-and-white DSH female weighing 14 pounds. Malachi is a solid black DSH male weighing nearly 8 pounds. I know that I have some weight to lose-my goal weight is 12 pounds. Because we were still showing signs of stress at the shelter, we moved to a foster home on August 22. I'm proud to say I have made the most progress since moving into the foster home. From the beginning, I have been eating, playing, accepting cat treats, and enjoying a brushing session. I like being scratched and lying close to my FM. I have a soft purr and have been meowing at the foster daughter. I have slept with her and made biscuits on her! I do not try to sit on anyone's lap. Not yet.
I have met the resident cat Merlin, an orange fellow, and we can finally sit in the same room, relaxing. He'd like to play, but I'm not buying what he's selling.
Malachi
Malachi is hiding right now, so I will explain what he's been doing. When he is hunkered down in a kitty cubby, and FM reaches in to pet him, he doesn't hiss, bite, or scratch. He simply scoots further away from her. He lets her pet him, but he doesn't respond. He moves from one cubby to another. One day, he accidentally started playing with a string for a few seconds, then realized what he was doing and stopped. Malachi has the run of the house, but he is not very curious. Once, he left our cat room, looked down the stairs, saw the dog, and returned to our room. The HSHC set up a phone call with a Feline Behavior Specialist. After describing Malachi, he told us it would just take more time for him to decide he is safe and loved. I love being in this foster home, but I know a forever home will be waiting for us as soon as we're ready. 9-29-26

Not Quite Ready To Adopt?
You can make an immeasurable impact by opening your home and your heart to an animal in need. Fostering is a great opportunity to introduce a pet into your home without making a lifelong commitment. Many of our foster humans end up adopting their fostered animals, but many also choose to just provide the temporary shelter and love our animals need to get through a trying time.
