Puppies
: HSHC will send puppies to foster homes when they are under 8 weeks of age. The foster home will be responsible for bringing the puppies in every 2 weeks for scheduled check-ups. In this category, the puppies may also come with an adult mom dog. These puppies will be 4 to 8 weeks of age.
Orphans
: Orphans are puppies under 8 weeks of age that do not have a mom. These puppies will generally require bottle feeding every 2-3 hours until at least 5 weeks of age and until they can transition to puppy food. At 8 weeks of age, the puppies would be available for adoption. The foster home will be responsible for bringing the puppies in every 2 weeks for scheduled check ups
Pregnant
: Sometimes, a female adult dog will come to the shelter pregnant. For fostering a pregnant mom, this will require a foster home that can go through the birthing process with the mom dog and foster the puppies until they are 8 weeks of age. The foster home will be responsible for bringing the puppies in every 2 weeks for scheduled check-ups.
Nursing Mom
: These are dogs that come to the shelter and already have a litter that has been born. The foster period would be until they are 8 weeks of age. The puppies age can range from 0 to 8 weeks. The foster home will be responsible for bringing the puppies in every 2 weeks for scheduled check-ups.
Adult Dogs
: These are dogs ranging from 1 year of age and up. Dogs for this category could need a stress break, socialization, training, weight gain, or have medical concerns. A foster home should be prepared to foster an adult dog for minimum of two weeks.
Medical
: These are dogs of any age that may be recovering from an illness, surgery, or injury. Time for fostering an animal that is recovering from a medical concern is determined by the animal's needs and will vary.
Behavior/Socialization
: This is for some of our dogs that will require guidance, socialization, and will work closely with our Behavior Department.
Upper Respiratory Infection
: Upper Respiratory Infections (URI) are very similar to the common cold humans get. URI is a virus dogs and cats tend to contract in crowded, stressful environments - like an animal shelter. But don't worry - most cases of URI resolve themselves with supportive care, a course of antibiotics, and rest in a quiet, calm home. This is contagious to other dogs, so an ideal foster home would be a home that has vaccinated dogs or has the ability to separate. This is not contagious to cats.
Heartworm Positive
: A heartworm positive dog will require monthly visits to the shelter for treatment and a foster home that can commit to fostering the animal until the dog no longer has heartworm.

Syringe Feeding
(Adult cats): This is for adult cats who may be experiencing a long period of inappetence. This will require a foster that can commit to a minimum of two weeks of fostering and can syringe feed an adult cat two to three times a day. If you have never done this before, don't worry -- we will teach you!
