Humane Society for Hamilton County Launches New

Spay/Neuter Program for 2008

NOBLESVILLE, Ind., February 2, 2008 –The Humane Society for Hamilton County announced today that they will be spaying or neutering all adopted pets prior to their adoptive families taking them home in lieu of providing a spay/neuter certificate at the point of adoption.

“We have been working diligently to transition our adoption program to one that allows for all adopted animals to be spayed or neutered before they go to their new homes,” said Rebecca Stevens, executive director of the Humane Society. “The financial implications of having all animals altered prior to adoption are significant since it is the adoption fee that pays for the procedure. But through our fundraising efforts and partnership with participating veterinarians in the community, we have been able to work out financial arrangements that have made the transition possible.”

Although the Humane Society’s spay/neuter certificate program has worked very well over the last few years, the change in their program comes at a perfect time now that breeder’s permits have been reinstated in Hamilton County. “I find that many Hamilton County residents are unaware that spaying or neutering their pets is mandatory in Hamilton County,” said Deputy Tom Rogers, Hamilton County’s Animal Control Officer. “Those choosing to not have their pets altered must request a no cost breeder’s permit, which is available through the Sheriff’s Office on the county web site at www.co.hamilton.in.us, or face stiff fines. We can better enforce the mandatory spay/neuter ordinance while preventing the continued overpopulation of unwanted animals that floods the shelters each year.”

The current population at the shelter will be spayed and neutered over the next 2 weeks. Starting February 11th, all adopted animals who need to be altered will be dropped off at a participating vet location for the procedure and adopters may pick their pets up directly from the vet clinic once the surgery is completed.

The Humane Society’s adoption program will still offer the benefits of a free Rabies vaccination and follow up wellness exam with participating veterinarians.
