July 2010
Letter from our Pack Leader
Dear Friends,

We're very excited to announce that Woofstock 2010
Rebecca Stevens & Buster, the Official Feline Mascot of the Humane Society.
Rebecca & Buster
helped raise gross proceeds of $30,000 for the shelter.  We're incredibly grateful to all those who attended on such a hot day as well as the volunteers, staff, vendors and sponsors it took to make the event possible.  A very special thanks to Verizon Wireless Music Center for hosting the event and our presenting sponsors--VCA, Lumina Foundation and Pet Supplies Plus.  To check out pictures from the day, visit the Woofstock website at
Woofstock 2010.

Now that Woofstock has wrapped, we're planning our biggest feline focused event of the year, Welcome to the Jungle, which will be held on Saturday, July 24th at the shelter. That day only, we'll be offering BIG TIME discounts on the adoption fees for the 400 plus cats and kittens currently waiting for homes.  Our friends at Pet Supplies Plus are providing a $25 gift cards to the first 25 feline adopters that day.  Vendors, pet photos, a caricaturist, food and more will make for a purrrfect day.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County currently has over 600 animals in our care.  Even if you can't add another pet to your pack, you can still make a difference.  Your donations, big or small, add up.  They mean animals like Jezebel, Grayson and hundreds like them will live lives filled with love instead of pain.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Thank you for your tax deductible donation!

HSHC Heroes will be a new feature in our monthly newsletter highlighting some very special people who are making a difference in the lives of our animals and community outreach efforts.

Krissi Davis

She is a regular face at the shelter known as the person who
Krissi Davis & shelter dog Ace.
Krissi & Ace
can wrangle any dog.  Krissi makes sure even the biggest, strongest dogs get their walks...but she does more than that.  We can count on Krissi to be the first one starting her fundraising efforts for events like Woofstock--where she raised $2,308.85--more than any other individual.  No one has to ask, she just shows up with misters the day of Woofstock to make sure the dogs have a cool place to rest.  Always going above and beyond, always good for a laugh...always a hero in our book.

Fernando Pastran

Fernando Fernando has a special gift.  He just knows how to communicate with a dog--even the most fearful or seemingly aggressive dog--in a way a very few of us can.  For 2 years, Fernando has volunteered his time not only helping shelter dogs overcome behavioral challenges making them more adoptable, but he has also helped countless families post-adoption work through issues that often result in a dog being returned.  Dogs may be a man's best friend, but he is truly theirs.

Rebecca Ebert

RebeccaShe volunteers full time for the shelter--coordinating our volunteer program for the first 2 years with us, and now focusing on the writing of those amazing pet profiles you'll find on our website.  Rebecca's methodology is meticulous and pain-staking. A meeting with the dog or cat before the writing begins gives her a feel for the animal's personality and things that make him or her unique.  Her research on the breed, behavior and interviews with our kennel and cattery staff ensure she captures the true essence of each and every animal.  What started out as just another black cat becomes a cat like no other once her words touch the page. Rebecca has given the animals a priceless gift.  Because of her, they have a voice...and a story...and a way to reach your hearts.

Monroe Bank Receives Top Marketing Honors for Partnership with HSHC
Monroe BankMAXI Awards are presented annually to Indiana Banker Association member institutions to recognize bank marketing excellence in Indiana. Not only did Monroe Bank win a MAXI Award in the special event category at the Mega Conference of the IBA on May 26 in downtown Indianapolis, but the Bank walked off with the highest honor of the Best of Show award in addition.

This award is given to the top entry selected from those judged to have the biggest branding impact. The MAXI for Best of Show went to Monroe Bank for its "Howl-O-Ween" campaign. This special event was held to increase the awareness of Monroe Bank in the Hamilton County market and to partner with the Humane Society for Hamilton County to create a lasting impression. The event was marketed through print advertisement, e-blasts, web ads and neighborhood blitzes. More than 250 neighbors joined in the pet costume contest, pet photos and free microchipping of family pets.

Congratulations to our friends at Monroe Bank and many PAWS Programthanks to them for supporting the shelter's

Jezebel--I used to think back on my life and feel nothing but hopeless.  Now I truly see better days ahead.

Jezebel
On June 12, I was found by my (now) foster mom.  I was only 28.5 pounds, very underweight and having difficulty walking due to the pain in my knees.  It was plain to see that I had been bred repeatedly for my puppies.  I wish I knew what has happened to all of them.  I hope they have a better life than I have had.

I am a red nosed, red headed American Pit Bull mix with just a bit of white here and there.  I'm only 2 years old and I enjoy the company of other dogs and even cats.

As soon as I arrived at the HSHC I was whisked off to the veterinarian to have my legs looked at.  X-rays revealed that I had luxating patellas in both back legs, meaning my knees pop in and out when I walk.  This is a very painful condition.  Unfortunately the surgery is also very expensive--$1500.  The nice people here at the shelter arranged for my surgery and I am recovering with my foster mom.

The nice people here call me their "pocket pit bull" because I am so petite and sweet-natured.  I must say, it's wonderful being loved. I've never known such kindness.  I hope you'll help these shelter by donating toward the cost of my surgery.  I am so grateful for the chance I've been given.

If you are interested in adopting me, please contact the shelter at 317-774-1263.  A secure, tax deductible donation toward my care may be made here:

Grayson--All cats are possessed of a proud spirit and the surest way forfeit the esteem of a cat is to treat him as an inferior being. -- Michael Joseph, English publisher

Grayson

I was brought to the shelter on December 17, 09 by my owner who told them at the desk that I was "unwanted." Just 3 years old and now I was unwanted.

After being here for a while, my hip began hurting really bad, to the point that I was very touchy about people messing with my cage or bedding. I think I developed a reputation for being a crab! I could not make anyone understand that I was in pain. When the vet put me under anesthesia she was able to see that my hip kept popping out of joint causing me pain when I moved. This is probably due to a birth defect, something like hip dysplasia in dogs.

The people here arranged for me to have the surgery required to fix this problem.  Man do I feel like a million bucks!   I know they would appreciate anything to help pay my medical bill which was $300. I sure appreciate what they've done for me.

If you are interested in adopting me, please visit the shelter!  A secure, tax deductible donation toward my care may be made here:
