Rebecca & Chulo
Dear Friends,

I've got good news and bad news.  The good news is, Welcome to the Jungle was very successful with 80 adoptions that day.  The bad news is, it didn't even put a dent in the number of animals currently waiting for homes.  With over 600 animals who remain in our care, and both foster and financial resources stretched to the max...we simply must find more adoptive and foster homes to keep up.

To aid this effort, on Saturday, August 14th, we're going to hold another big adoption event in celebration of the Colts season kick-off.  The event will be held from 12 P.M. to  5 P.M.  at the shelter featuring not only discounted feline adoptions, but also dog adoption fees will be discounted lower than ever before

If you cannot adopt, please spread the word to your family, friends, on FaceBook, co-workers....you never know who might be in the market for a furry companion!

There are so many unwanted and abandoned animals
Greta is an 8 year old Beagle mix who arrived as a stray. She is waiting for her forever home.
Greta
like Greta who are relying on us for a second chance.  Your support--whether financial, through adoption, fostering, volunteering or just spreading the word--is the only way she and all her shelter friends will get that chance.

Thank you in advance for your continued support...and we'll see you on August 14th wearing your blue and white!

Sincerely,

Thank you for your tax deductible donation!

HSHC Heroes

HSHC Heroes will be a new feature in our monthly newsletter highlighting some very special people who are making a difference in the lives of our animals and community outreach efforts.

Jeriann Wilcox

Jeriann is an incredibly dedicated volunteer serving asJeriann not only one of our most skilled dog walkers, but also a trainer for the program.  She takes on some of the most difficult cases like large breed dogs who arrive without any training or leash manners.  Jeriann sees  potential in them all, and she helps them each realize that potential with patience and love. No matter what we throw her way, she's there to take it on.  Now that's a hero!

Gail Pierce

GailGail has been volunteering at the Humane Society for several years. You will see her here faithfully each week--often on her lunch breaks from work--because to her, it's one more hour she can spend helping the cats she knows best find the right homes.  Gail has long supported TNR efforts in Hamilton County and has been our go-to person in finding proper placement for feral cats who come to the shelter.  Gail is now one of our lead volunteer trainers helping new volunteers learn the ins and outs of all things feline at the Humane Society.  She has been an invaluable asset to the shelter...and a much needed hero to countless shelter cats.

Danielle Beck
 Danielle
Danielle has been the Humane Society's Manager of
Marketing and Public Relations since this past February...which is a short time considering the volume of her accomplishments.  She is the mastermind behind our incredibly popular Face Book page which keeps our supporters informed regarding daily adoptions, new arrivals and special announcements.  Her work days stop long enough for dinner and a visit with her own pets, and then she's back at it.  Her boundless creativity, drive and passion have already helped so many animals find homes.  We, and especially the animals, are very blessed to have Danielle on our team.

Meet Botox: "My doppelganger is Ron Perlman."

BotoxPerlman

We may not have the prettiest faces in the world, but Ron and I still deserve to be loved.  I am a very laid back, 6 year old Chinese Shar-pei/Shepherd mix with reddish hair and plenty of wrinkles. As a matter of fact, my name is Botox due to my wrinkles-Botie for short! My resume is impressive, but you should know I am both neutered and house broken.

Ron and I are alike in that we feel comfortable taking on the "bad guy" roles but are really softies at heart. This is not to say that I am "Hell-boy", but I am kinda picky when it comes to showing my charming side to just anyone.  I simply prefer adults to rug rats.  I'm past my puppy stage and ready to spend my life with grown ups.  Is that so much to ask?   I don't mind sharing the spot light with a cat, however....I think they're interesting and I appreciate their independent ways.  Other dogs, not so much. Some are okay...but I am a bit selective.

I move rather slowly when going for walks as I don't want to work up a sweat; my idea of a good time includes napping on the couch while you massage my wrinkles.  If you are a fan of Shar-pei mixes and are 55 or older, I qualify for the PAWS program too! I've been waiting so long for a home.  Please give me a chance.

Tasha: Have you ever heard of Tasha Tudor?

TashaShe was an author and illustrator of children's and nature books. She loved cats and dogs and all things in nature. She was still working in her garden and painting even when she was very old, by human standards. I like to think that I am named for her. I too am "aged to perfection" at approximately 10 years old.

I found myself at the HSHC on October 25, 09 which was a very good thing. Being front declawed, I was never meant to be a stray kitty. I was very, very thin and I had an eye infection. But I was so very grateful to be some place warm, dry and out of danger that I didn't care. The good people here took care of me, gave me medicine and plenty of nourishing food. I have overheard the people here say that I am a very sweet girl, well past the kitten energy levels and content to be a quiet companion. Oh yes, I forgot. I am a Tortoiseshell girl with light green eyes.

If you are 55 or older you probably know who Tasha Tudor was. You can adopt me for a reduced fee! Please don't let me spend my golden years here.
Mosquitoes Can Be Deadly

Most pet owners have heard of heartworm disease, but what many don't realize is that the cause of heartworm Mosquitodisease starts with a simple mosquito bite.  Heartworm disease is more prevalent in dogs than cats, but both can contract the disease.

Transmission:  The disease is not directly transmitted from dog to dog, cat to cat or to humans. Heartworms can only be transmitted from animal to animal by mosquitoes.  When a mosquito bites an infected animal, young heartworms called microfilariae enter into that mosquito's system. Within two weeks, the microfilariae develop into infective larvae inside the mosquito; these infective larvae can be transmitted to another animal when this mosquito takes its next blood meal.*

Heartworm Disease:  The infective larvae mature into adult heartworms in approximately six months.  The worms damage the blood vessels, and reduce the heart's pumping ability, resulting in severe lung and heart disease, and eventually death.   Heartworm disease is treatable, but expensive.  Animals typically have a full recovery from the disease once treated, but they continue to be susceptible unless a monthly heartworm preventative is given.

Prevention:  The cost to prevent heartworm is much more affordable than treating the disease, not to mention the best thing for your pet!  Heartworm preventatives may be purchased from your veterinarian or variety of other sources and should be given to your cats and dogs monthly.

The Humane Society sees so many dogs pass through our doors with heartworm disease.  It's a painful and deadly disease that can be completely avoided with monthly heartworm preventative.  If your pet is not currently on a preventative, please make an appointment with your veterinarian so your pet can be tested for the disease.  It is important to ensure an animal doesn't currently have the disease before a preventative is started.
