The shelter is beyond capacity. Due to a sudden increase in owner surrendered pets and strays over the last 2 weeks, we are bursting at the seams. Dogs of every size including many pure breeds as well as kittens of every color are currently available for adoption. PLEASE adopt a shelter animal TODAY!

Tasha: Have you ever heard of Tasha Tudor?

She was an author and illustrator of children’s and nature books.
She loved cats and dogs and all things in nature. She was still working in her garden and painting even when she was very old, by human standards. I like to think that I am named for her. I too am “aged to perfection” at approximately 10 years old. I found myself at the HSHC on October 25, 09 which was a very good thing. Being front declawed, I was never meant to be a stray kitty. I was very, very thin and I had an eye infection. But I was so very grateful to be someplace warm, dry and out of danger that I didn’t care. The good people here took care of me, gave me medicine and plenty of nourishing food. I have overheard the people here say that I am a very sweet girl, well past the kitten energy levels and content to be a quiet companion. If you are 55 or older you probably know who Tasha Tudor was. You can adopt me for a reduced fee. Oh yes, I forgot. I am a Tortoiseshell girl with light green eyes. I look forward to meeting you.
  Max

There is something in sickness that breaks down the pride of manhood. ~Charles Dickens

I was surrendered to the HSHC on September 12, ’09 because I had cystitis. It’s a sad day when your physical health determines where you live. I am 5 years old, not old by cat standards, but I guess my owner did not want to deal with my “plumbing troubles”. I found out that by changing over to a diet designed to prevent further cystitis, I can live a long and healthy life and I have nothing to be ashamed of! Lots of cats have problems with this and it is easily taken care of. That being said, I still have to face the fact that my owner didn’t want me and now I have been living at the shelter for 6 months. Listen, I know you might think I’m “damaged goods”, but I am really a nice guy! I enjoy the company of other pets, however, kids frighten me. They are too loud and active for my tastes. I think I am a good looking guy, tabby with light green eyes. I’ve been neutered so I could leave at a moment’s notice! Because I’m considered old (!), I qualify for the PAWS program. In other words, I’m a bargain if you are 55 or older.

Two things are aesthetically perfect in the world - the clock and the cat. ~

Emile Auguste Chartier

I would like to think that I am pretty much perfect. But on December 1, 09 my owner surrendered me to the HSHC because I was fearful of the family dog. I only lived with her for 6 months and I was trying my best to get along. I sure did love the kids in the family! I am 6 years old and no one knows where I lived before those 6 months. I really miss being a family cat. Even though I enjoy the people here who take care of me, it’s not the same as being in a home with plenty of places to hide and sit in the sun. I am solid black with pale yellow eyes. I found out that there are lots of black cats here which makes it rather difficult for me to stand out from the crowd. I am a really friendly guy and I can tell you that I have a nice personality. I would, however, prefer to be in a dog-free home, unless that dog really loves cats! Because I’m 6 years old, I qualify for the PAWS program (which means if you are 55 or older you can adopt me for a reduced fee!).
Zita: If I don’t look enthusiastic, it’s because I was named for a pasta noodle!

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but just because I was a stray does not mean that I will answer to just any name.
I found myself in a cage here at the HSHC on November 4, 09 and I was shocked to find my new name was Zita. Like most of my compatriots, I arrived healthy but soon fell ill with an upper respiratory infection. Cats are very susceptible to colds, especially when we are feeling stressed. I spent some time in a foster home to recover & I loved every minute!! I’m back now and I have it on good authority that I am one of the cattery staff’s absolute favorite cat! But since she can’t adopt all the cats she falls in love with, I am hoping that someone else will take her recommendation and adopt me. I am 4 years old, already spayed, a Tabby with green eyes and high hopes for a fresh start in a new home. Although I won’t be able to tell you what my real name is, perhaps you can choose a new name, preferably one that has nothing to do with noodles!
Bindi: I look a bit like my namesake, don’t you think?

She’s called the Jungle Girl and she likes to smile. I smile all the time!
I am a 4 year old Tabby who was abandoned at the HSHC on Valentine’s Day. That day I didn’t feel like smiling because it feels really bad to be dumped somewhere, unwanted and all alone. I hope it isn’t because I have a cleft palate, but I wouldn’t doubt it. Some people think if you have a physical problem you are not worthy of love. But I know that I am a very good girl and I deserve to be loved just as much as any other cat. The people here have been so kind to me; they took me to the vet to have my palate looked at. The doctor said I had an infection and that is why I was so underweight—only 5 pounds. I need to have my mouth squirted with water to clean out any food particles, but I don’t mind this a bit! My palate is even starting to fill in a bit because now it is being taken care of properly. It may never close completely, but it is so much better.

I don’t mind my mouth cleaning because I love to be held. It feels so good to be cuddled! I am so grateful for any kindness, I can’t help but smile all the time! Everyone at the shelter says that I am a real “sweetie-pie” and I think that means you would like me very much. Please come and see me. Just because I have a little hole in my palate does not mean that I am not a good kitty.
Hermes: It is impossible for a lover of cats to banish these alert, gentle, and discriminating little friends, who give us just enough of their regard and complaisance to make us hunger for more. - Agnes Repplier

I think I like this Agnes person! I checked into this shelter on December 15, 09 when I was found by an Animal Control Officer. Life on the street had not been easy; turns out I had a bad case of tapeworms. I had never been neutered which means, as a male cat, fighting with other male cats is par for the course. The good people here made sure that I was neutered. It was a relief to find myself in this safe & relatively quiet place. I am a bit over 1 year old and I have what they call a medium hair coat. I’m mostly black but I have white “buttons” down my chest and belly. I have it on very good authority that I am a loveable boy! One of the cattery staff says that I get excited when she comes to see me; I will rub my head against her head and give kisses. Yep, I’m a lover, not a fighter! I seem to crave affection and am more than happy to give it back. My goal in life is to become a lap cat and live with a person who loves kitties. Please come and visit with me. I can’t wait to find my forever home.

  Miss Acrobat: 5th Grade Health

Can we have a frank talk about birth control?
Look me in the eye! Listen, I’m serious and I don’t want to hear any giggling. I believe every cat has the right to control the number of litters of kittens she brings into the world. I’m not just your domestic health teacher, I am also the victim of the cavalier attitude of the public regarding spaying and neutering. When I arrived at the HSHC on January 21, ’10 I was accompanied by my kittens, Peanut, Circus and Juggler. I lost the other kittens due to cold weather and poor nutrition. Of course the children got adopted right away, but did anyone consider the beleaguered mother? No. I am still sitting here waiting to be sprung from this place. I am only 3 years old, far too young to be wasting my time. I have a message to get out to the public: SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR CATS & DOGS! As it is, I am a bit on the nervous side, some would even call me a “scaredy cat”. But you try caring for helpless kittens in this thankless world and you would be a bit skittish too! I know I am wearing my SERIOUS face in my photo, but I can be a fun loving individual. I just would prefer to be a career woman and not a baby factory. So please consider me as potential new pet material. I will wait for you right here. You can’t miss me, I have a cool “school bell” shape on my face and I have “spay & neuter” placards up on the walls of my cage.:
Clover: I wish I had a 4 leaf clover so I could wish myself into a forever home.
I am a bit over 1 year old and I am one of the thousands of kittens born each year who are left to fend for themselves.
I was found by a nice lady who cared enough to bring me to the HSHC on Jan. 30. People here say that I am coming out of my shell—I guess I used to hide under my blanket most of the time. But I don’t do that anymore. I am feeling a little safer now & I’m even feeling a little better. I arrived with an eye infection on the left side. That’s why my photo looks a little “off”. Medicine and loving care have helped me heal. Since I was never spayed, the shelter took care of that also. I am a laid back kind of girl, easy going and affectionate. Loud, boisterous cats intimidate me, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable in a home full of rowdies. It has been pointed out to me (I have never had a mirror of my own) that I have a distinctive pyramid shape on my forehead. I have very soft black and white fur and amber eyes. If you love clovers, like from 4-H or school symbols, then wouldn’t you like to take me home with you? Please don’t let me stay here very long.
  Annabelle:
"Life is hard. Soften yours with a cat.” --
Unknown

Life really is hard, you know? I used to live with a family who cared enough to have me spayed.
I was well fed and loved. But then one day I got separated from them and I ended up at the shelter. This was in early March and I have given up hope that they will come and find me. I am mostly grey, but I have some white on my chin and chest. I am a quiet sort of girl, laid-back and easy to overlook, I guess. I enjoy being petted and loved, but it does take me a minute to warm up. Once I do, I’m putty in your hands! Since I’m not a flashy color and I don’t do things to draw attention to me I am hoping that my photo will catch someone’s eye. I truly want to be a lap cat again. I promise that I will make your life a bit softer. Do you like to take afternoon naps? Do you enjoy the sunshine? Is peace and quiet your idea of a wonderful way to spend the day? Then I think we would be perfect for one another. I’m three years old and ready to start making your life better today!

"One day a cat will opt to join you while you are utterly relaxed in muscle and brain, and with a delicate miaow and a velvet paw will show you transcendental meditation by an expert”. --V. Martin

Four years ago I was adopted from this shelter. Then on February 8, ’10 my owner surrendered me back to the HSHC. They said I had “behavior issues”. Well if by that they mean I am scared of children & dogs and strange cats give me the willies, then so be it. I am a very friendly boy with an affectionate nature. I love to cuddle on your lap and purr. I came to the shelter with mats on my back. Inside these mats the people here found glitter! Now can you surmise just how I had glitter filled mats on my back? I may have served as an arts & crafts project!
I am 5 years old, solid black, have moon yellow eyes, all four paws are declawed and I’m already neutered. Keep in mind that I will need a very s-l-o-w introduction to other cats. Would you believe I’m rather frightened of cats? Yep! I insist that I go to a home with no children or grandchildren. Kids scare me even more than cats! Keep that glitter away from me.... I am ready to share my skills in meditation and complete relaxation. If you are 55 or older I qualify for the PAWS program, which means that you can adopt me for a reduced price.

Zelly: Humans: No fur, no paws, no tail. They run away from mice. They never get enough sleep. How can you help but love such an absurd animal? --An anonymous cat on Homo Sapiens

Bless their hearts...humans are just so helpless. I used to own some humans, but on March 1, they surrendered me to the shelter. I worry how they will make it without me. I am a 6 year old Calico cat who has been spayed. I lived with this family for 5 years and they dropped me off because I had some accidents in the house. They could have at least taken me to the doctor to see if I was sick. Oh well, water under the bridge now. My greatest pleasure in life is being a lap cat. I am a big talker! Once you get me started I will chirp and meow your arm off! I enjoy meal time of course and attention from my humans. I do not enjoy the company of other cats however. I have many fans among the staff at HSHC and I know they’ll miss me when I’m adopted. But don’t let that stop you! If you are 55 or older, you can adopt me for a reduced fee. If you are a human in desperate need of the loving care of a cat, please give me a call.

  Rosemary
"There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast.” –Anonymous

Truer words were never spoken! The name’s Rosemary and I’m a 1 ½ year old Torbie who came to the shelter as a pregnant mother. I was really down on my luck so it was a good thing someone found me and brought me here. This was back on January 27, ’10. I stayed with a foster mom while I raised my kittens and after they all found homes, I was brought back to see if anyone would adopt me. For a while, I was living in the kitty condominiums of cattery 2. But let me tell you, all those other cats and their constant chatter, gossip about this one and that one and the pressure to join social networking groups really got on my last nerve. I prefer a more quiet and solitary life. Maybe it’s because I was such a young mother, but I’m not afraid to be alone! A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle you know. Don’t get me wrong; I like people just fine. I enjoy being petted and loved on. I am really sweet when I don’t have 6 kids hanging on me or nosy neighbors in my ear. I guess I am not cut out for sorority life. I am an independent! I am now spayed which is a big relief. I am currently scanning the classified for a new owner who will treat me the way I deserve to be treated—like a princess! I r-e-a-l-l-y enjoy my meal time and insist upon a regular schedule. So, in conclusion, if you would like a young, dynamic single gal as a roommate and you are not the very clingy type, I think we could be best friends

  Manny
One cat just leads to another. ~ Ernest Hemingway

I’d like you to meet Manny, the cat with the biggest, most luminous green eyes you’ve ever seen. This 8 years “young” gentleman came to us as a stray on October 11, 09. He doesn’t look or act his age. He currently resides in the Community Cat room and finds the general ambiance quite pleasing. He was recently seen on Pet Tails TV and according to reviews, he gave a stellar performance. Manny is friendly, easy going, comes right up to you for a head scratch or a cheek rub. He likes to be held and does not object to public displays of affection. There is no way I can adequately describe Manny’s eyes; you will just have to come to the HSHC to see him for yourself. He has already been neutered so he can leave with you today. Manny obviously gets along with other cats, so if you would like to add an Abercrombie & Fitch- like model to your household, I would highly recommend this stud-muffin! Manny qualifies for the PAWS program.

Tiger:

The only mystery about the cat is why it ever decided to become a domestic animal.
~ Sir Compton Mackenzie

Yeah, I sorta wonder about this myself.
I am an 8 year old domesticated Tiger. I lived with my family for 4 years and some other people for 4 years before that. You ask why I’m here. My family surrendered me on February 18 because of my “health”. I am perfectly healthy, except for the tendency to develop crystals in my urinary tract. This is easily dealt with by feeding me a food designed to control crystal formation. It’s no big deal. Now as for my likes and dislikes…..
Dislikes: I am a smidge frightened of children. I am rather selective about the cats that I will befriend.

Likes: I crave wide open spaces and rooms to explore. I love to be petted and “loved on”. I enjoy chillin’.

The good people here have noticed that I am not crazy about being in a cage. But I know that if I can live in an apartment or a house with places to hide, windows to look through and plenty of room to stretch out, my outlook on life will be much brighter! I am already neutered and I am declawed in front. I also qualify for the PAWS program.

I am now available for adoption at Purrs & Gurrs located at 11650 Olio Rd, #500, Fishers, IN.
  Brooklyn
No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch. ~ Leo Dworken

Hello folks! Get ready to fall in love. I am a 7 year old solid black DSH girl who is already spayed and ready at a moment’s notice to turn in my room key.
I was found as a stray at the corner of 116th and Brookschool Road. I had a wound on my tail and it had been shaved so there is every reason to believe that I used to live with someone. Long story short, I had to have most of my tail amputated. I stayed with a foster mom while I recovered and this is what she said about me:

Brooklyn is a big love! She always came up to be petted and loved attention. She has this really cute short meow that almost sounds like a chirp. She would start doing it when I came in, in order to get my attention. She has a little nub tail; it was still shaved when I fostered her and it looked so funny! She didn’t mind me petting it either. All around, she’s just a big, beautiful, loveable girl!

So I think that says it all. I’m affectionate, lovable, I make cute noises, I’m already spayed and I have an aerodynamic tail! If you are 55 or older I qualify for the PAWS program and the front desk will make you a deal with my adoption fee.
  Captain

Look me in the eye and tell me what would have happened to me if I hadn’t been picked up and brought to the HSHC on December 16, 09.
I shudder to think. I am 5 years old and I have been living with a nice family who had me neutered and gave me a snappy blue collar to wear. Although I miss them, I am having a blast here in the Community Cat Room. I don’t want to sound conceited, but I am a VERY popular individual around here. I’ve never met a stranger. All the staff thinks I am wonderful! When they come into the room during maid service, I enjoy swishing around their legs to get some extra attention. Once I have them in what I call a “cute-kitty coma” I can make a break for it out of the door! Yes, I’m a regular jokester! I stayed with a foster family while I had a cold. My foster mom says that I’m a laid-back guy; I enjoy attention but I was content to let her approach me. I got along just fine with the other cats in the home. If you are 55 or older I am a PAWS pet (you can adopt me for a Senior discount!)
  Marilyn Monroe

"I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as heck don't deserve me at my best."
— Marilyn Monroe

You may immediately see the similarity between that very famous Marilyn and me.
We are both incredibly beautiful, blue-eyed & pretty important figures in our respective worlds. You’ll notice in my photograph that my right eye looks a bit strange. The eye meds they had me on caused my pupils to dilate. I do worry about my appearance; I feel that a girl has got to look pretty at all times. I am only 1 ½ years old and my owner surrendered me to this shelter thingy on September 12 after having me for a year. Before that I was an orphan in another shelter. (Marilyn also had a sad childhood.) My owner said that I didn’t get along with his other pets. I beg to differ. The other dogs and cats scared the daylights out of me! I got along just fine with the kids (as long as they didn’t come on too strong!) I spent some time in a foster home and I thoroughly enjoyed myself there. I think my foster mom was a bit star struck and she kept a respectful distance. Here is what she had to say about me: I only had her for a week. She was pretty shy and kept to herself at first; although by the end of the week she was a little more social and would allow me to pet her. I had to go to her though. She wasn’t too interested in coming to me. Maybe you could say she was a diva. I don’t know that I would say I’m a diva, but I do know that I like people on my own terms. If you appreciate beauty and charm in a feline, then I would be happy to grant you an interview. Toodles!

I am staying with our friends at Pet Supplies Plus in Noblesville off of SR 37.
  Diva

“When I play with my cat, who knows whether she is not amusing herself with me more than I with her." ~ Montaigne

I am one of the hundreds of pets who are surrendered by their owners to the HSHC. Nobody ever sits us down and tells us that our lives are going to be turned upside down, that we are going to a strange place with lots of other cats and noisy dogs or that we will never see our owners again. This can be devastating to a pet. But I am determined to make the best of this situation. I am only 1 ½ years old, for goodness sake, so I have a long life ahead of me. My owner gave me up reportedly because I “peed” outside the box. Well, I’m hear to tell you that I live in the community cat room and I never have this problem. I just think we were not “made for each other”. By the way, she never bothered to have me spayed! Everyone here says that I am a fun-loving, playful girl. I guess I am also a bit bossy with the other cats in my domicile. You can do it my way or you can do it the wrong way—that’s my motto! I am hoping to find my “soul mate” so we can amuse each other!

Foxtrot: I used to be good on the dance floor, but these days I don’t feel much like dancing…

No kidding, they don’t call me Foxtrot for nothing. I was a regular Fred Astaire, but back on January 5 I got separated from my home and ended up here at the shelter. I am about 3 years old and am already neutered. When I first arrived I looked on this situation as an adventure and I was having a high old time. But as my roommates have gradually left and I have no best friend any more it becomes increasingly hard to keep my chin up. I used to play with and give dance lessons to the other cats, but these days it’s hard to just wake up and smell the cat litter. I am normally a very affectionate, “good time Charley” & I sure hope to get my mojo back. All it will take is checking out of this “motel” and into your home. I could really use a friend (both human and feline!) So how about giving me a try and we can trip the light fantastic on your kitchen floor!

How can you say no to this face?

Hello my name is Binx. I am very, very, lovable cat. Although I am full grown, I am quite tiny.
I get along with other cats and children, and enjoy cuddling with the people. When I want to be petted I walk on my hind legs, and I love to carry my toys in my mouth. Some people confuse me for a puppy! Thank for reading and I hope you choose me!

The previous message came to you via Binx’s foster sister. This nearly 2 years old boy with the permanent tuxedo was a stray back in September 08. He has lived with his foster family all his life. He is neutered and ready to find his forever home. I think the information Binx provided (above) gives you a good picture of just how special this petite cat is. I think it would be a wise move for anyone looking to adopt a cat to rush to the HSHC and set up an interview with Binx. You won’t be sorry!

  Quicksilver

Unpredictable; mercurial: "a quicksilver character, cool and willful at one moment, utterly fragile the next" (Sven Birkerts)

On March 13 I was found by a thoughtful person and brought to the HSHC in order to reunite with my owner.
I didn’t have the heart to tell her not to hold her breath. I’ve been on my own now for quite a while. I am a 5 year old male Tabby with piercing green eyes and a dignified demeanor. I was never neutered before coming here and I had some nasty scabs from flea bites that I had scratched till I bled. I am missing a claw on my front right paw. You don’t realize how tough survival is out in the world if you’ve never been a stray cat. Finding food and shelter become your only goals. So I am relieved to be living where food is always provided and shelter is a given. I do get very focused when it is meal time and I don’t want to shilly-shally around. Just give me my food and let me eat in peace. I am a bit rough around the edges because of my hard scrabble life. So I guess you could say that my name really fits me. One thing I can brag about is my ability to get along with other cats. You don’t live to be 5 years old as an outdoor cat without learning to make friends. I have heard that people will come and adopt us homeless animals and make us their “forever pets”. I’d like to sign up for that! If you are 55 or older I qualify for the PAWS program.
Baby Boy “Cats do not declare their love much; they enact it, by their myriad invocations of our pleasure” --Vicki Hearne

You may not know this by looking at me, but I am a very special cat.
Yes, I’m a black & brown Tabby with green eyes. And yes, I am 3 years old, neutered and declawed in front. There are lots of Tabbies in this world. But I’m the only one like me. I was surrendered by my owner on February 12, because after one month he knew that he was allergic to me. He got me as a gift, so no harm, no foul. It will take more than a little change of address to keep this Baby Boy down! I truly enjoy people! I get a kick out of spending time with humans. I caught a little cold while staying at the shelter so my foster mom said this about me:

“He loves attention...very snuggly! He’s usually hiding behind a box or lying up on the desk, but he comes running as soon as you walk in the room. He does a good job of tolerating my 3 year old daughter, but I think she’s a little loud for his taste. And he pretty much hides from the dogs too. Very sweet cat though!” And the staff at the shelter will tell you that I am a very cool cat, calm funny and loving. I am allergic to metal food dishes (who knew?) but as long as I have a ceramic bowl, I’m good to go. So what’s so special about me?

You’ll just have to come and see for yourself! I’ll be waiting!
  Lilac

People that don't like cats haven't met the right one yet. ~ Deborah A. Edwards

I would like for you to meet Lilac. I think you will agree that she is the “right one”! A kind person brought her to our shelter on March 13. No one came to claim her so: their loss is your gain! Lilac is all grey except for a little white spot on her chest. We estimate her to be about 6 years old. Someone cared for her at one time because she had already been spayed. Lilac is the right kitty for you because she is sweet, quiet cuddly and she craves affection. We are not talking a “stand offish” cat here! Another wonderful feature of Lilac is her amazing fur—it feels just like bunny fur. So holding her is a treat for you both emotionally and physically.

If you are 55 or older, Lilac qualifies for the PAWS program, so you can take her home for a reduced fee. Now all you have to do is come to the HSHC and ask for Lilac!

  Glow

Cats are absolute individuals, with their own ideas about everything, including the people they own. - John Dingman

Yes, I would agree with this Mr. Dingman person.
I have been at the Humane Society since I was picked up by an Animal Control Officer on March 8. When I first arrived, everyone said I was such a sweet heart. I was friendly, loving & cheerful. Then I got sick and had to go to Isolation to recover. After I got better and could move back into cattery 1, everyone said I became more grouchy and moody. Let me tell you something about being in isolation at the shelter. You are in a cage in a small room filled with other sick cats and they are all coughing and sneezing and complaining about their aches and pains. It’s enough to make anyone cranky. I know that if I were to find my forever home I would feel so much more like my old happy self. I am 3 years old, I’ve been spayed and I am ready to move out today. I am not so keen on other cats, so I’d love to be the only feline in your family.
  Hera

People who love cats have some of the biggest hearts around. ~ Susan Easterly

I am hoping that a cat lover will see my story and will open his or her heart to me.
I am about 2 years old and I came to the HSHC on March 22 when a nice person found me. I am a petite girl with a tendency to be a bit skittish around loud noises and new situations. I am shy, but once I get to know you and feel comfortable I am a very nice kitty. I was not spayed when I arrived here, but they took care of that for me. I really don’t want to be a mother.

It would be so nice to have a home to call my own. I hope that there is a cat lover out there in the world who has a little room for me in their life. I will be forever grateful.

Salem—wanna hear a good joke?

I gave my cat a bath the other day… they love it. He sat there, he enjoyed it, it was fun for me. The fur would stick to my tongue, but other than that…
” – Steve Martin
Salem is quite the jokester! The funny guy arrived as a stray on April 9, 10 when a kind person found him doing stand up on the corner in Noblesville. Some of his audience must not have liked him because he had an abscessed bite wound on his neck. Everyone’s a critic. So Salem went to stay with one of our terrific foster moms. This is what she had to say about Salem:

Salem has long canine teeth. I loved that about him because sometimes I would see them sticking out of his mouth just a little. It gives him a vampire look (which I suppose isn't charming to everyone, but I thought it was cute!). He has a very sweet, loving personality. He used to follow me around the room to get attention. He loves to be petted and loved. He enjoys rubbing his head against me, and if I kneel down to his level, he will even rub his head against mine! At first, he was very tense with the other cats and hissed at them a lot. In about a week, he settled and was much more laid back.

So you can see that this boy is not only good looking in an “Eclipse” sort of way, but he’s also very affectionate. It may be that he likes to do a solo act, but if you have laid back kitties who appreciate Salem’s comedy styling’s, then you probably have a good match. He is about 4 years old, neutered, healthy and ready to become a permanent act at your house!
  Peeka

All cats, given the opportunity, are people-watchers. –Roger Caras, A Cat is Watching, 1989

This adorable girl striking quite a pose is a “people person”. Peeka was abandoned at the HSHC on October 19, 09. This can mean that someone dumped her over our fence or that when called to pick up their lost cat they decided not to come get her. In any case little Peeka was a very scared kitty. She is a gorgeous girl 5 year old girl, spayed and declawed on her front paws. Because she was so unhappy, we found a wonderful foster mom for her. This is what she reports about Peeka:

I originally picked Peeka up from the HCHS to foster because she was traumatized by having to live in the shelter. I brought her home and it took a lot of adjusting and she finally got comfortable enough to come out of her shell. What emerged was a very loving cat who just wants a lot of attention! She loves to sleep in bed with us and has become my morning buddy! She gets along well with other cats but seems to be scared around the dogs. I think she'd be happiest being an “only fur-baby”. She will walk around the house "calling" for you to pay attention to her. She loves to play hide and seek; she hides and meows until you find her. She is an amazing little cat. She is an adorably sweet kitty who deserves her forever home!!!
Her foster mom said that if Peeka’s litter box is not cleaned every day, she has a tendency to use her bed as her litter box. This may be due to her anxiety about the dogs and is likely to disappear if she is an only cat as well. Cats are pretty fastidious about their litter boxes so keeping them clean is always a good idea.
Peeka qualifies for the PAWS program. If you are interested in her please contact the Animal Programs Team at 774-1263.

William: There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast.
~ Author Unknown

Hey, when a guy is hungry what’s he supposed to do?
I am a growing boy and I need to keep up my strength. I was brought to the HSHC on February 24 because I was homeless. I am only a bit over 1 year old and it was very scary out in the world on my own. Not long after arriving I ended up with a cold so I spent some quality time with a terrific foster mom. Here is what she has to say about me:

I can't say enough about what an awesome cat that big boy is! I just love him! He is huge and LOVES to eat!! I have a cat room where all my foster cats stay, and I go in twice a day to care for and play with them. Each time I go in, I fill the food bowls. Well, as soon as I entered the room, William would run over and start eating like there was no tomorrow! I think he knew I would fill the bowl again, so the more he ate, the more food he would get! Sometimes, I feed them all canned food or tuna. I put one small bowl down for each. At the time I had William, a couple of the cats didn't eat their tuna. He walked from bowl to bowl and finished it for them. When I brought him for his check ups, we used to laugh at the wrinkles (or rolls) on his neck. He's really lovable and approached me for petting. He was also very relaxed around the other cats. I used to pick him up and hold him on his back like a baby. He would usually put his paw or head on my shoulder and just lay there. I nicknamed him my heavyweight lover!

I do take umbrage at the term “heavyweight”. As I said, I’m still growing. But I am looking forward to finding my forever home. By the way, I’m neutered.
Fred: “I had been told that the training procedure with cats was difficult. It's not. Mine had me trained in two days.” ~ Bill Dana

On May 19 Fred’s owner surrendered him to the shelter for “behavior reasons”.
Keep in mind that Fred happens to be 11 years old. Kind of like putting Grampa in a nursing home against his will. You’d never know he was a Senior by looking at him. In this photo he is in his foster home posing on top of the toilet. Check out those green eyes! Here is what his foster mother told us about Fred:

He is an absolute sweetheart! He never had any accidents outside the box when he was here, though he was in a small bathroom. He has a lump on his tail that someone (HSHC medical staff) checked out and said it's likely a fatty tumor. I didn't notice any growth on it while he was here, but it's something to keep an eye on. Never once did he bite or try to scratch at me, even through all the times I was giving him medicine! He loved to lie in my lap; he'd definitely want a lot of attention in a forever home. I think he would do ok with children, as he was never bothered by me carrying him around or dancing around with him. He also seemed to pretty much ignore my cats, though they were never in direct contact with one another, just paws under the door of the room he was in. I hope this testimonial helps him get his forever home!
Thank you for taking such good care of our Fred! Here’s hoping someone will check out his story and give Fred another chance at a forever family. He qualifies for the PAWS program, so if you are 55 or older he can be adopted for a reduced fee.
  Richard, the Lionheart

The playful kitten, with its pretty little tigerish gambols, is infinitely more amusing than half the people one is obliged to live within the world.' - Lady Sydney Morgan (1783 - 1859)

Here is one playful kitten that really thinks he’s king!
Richard was found by one of the Animal Control Officers on March 22. He is 9 months old and full of “tigerish gambols”! As a matter of fact Richard is so full of energy and playfulness, he’s been known to turn the community room upside down in his mad dashing around. Look at his handsome face and you can see that he is a little tiger. Richard is a tabby, a bit on the small side and we already took care of neutering him. If you already have a cat at home and are looking for a companion, Richard would do best with a cat who is very confident in his superiority to this youngster! He could use being brought down a peg or two. But with the right home, Richard should turn into a real pussycat.

One thing for sure, Richard is very entertaining, spunky and ready for any adventure that comes his way.
Cayla—I have a feeling I’ve been here before!

Well, Cayla that’s because you have. Back in July 2007, someone found you as a little kitten on the Hamilton County Fairgrounds and brought you to us.
You were adopted in August of that year. But we were surprised to see you again on April 29 ’10 being surrendered by your family because they were moving. You are 3 years old now and all grown up. You are a petite little girl and can usually be found sitting up in your cage looking to see whose attention you can catch. Everyone here knows that you are very pretty, very loving, playful and a real “attention-hog”! Don’t be offended! That’s a good thing Cayla, because it means you really love human beings and crave their attention. Because you have already been spayed you can go home today with the lucky person who is approved to adopt you. We’ll miss you but we hope we never see you here again, unless it’s on a social visit!

I am staying with our friends at PetSmart in Noblesville located on SR 37.

Molly A cat is like a puzzle with no solution. –
Anne Campbell

To look at this beautiful face with the luminous green eyes you might expect to Molly to have a serene cat personality.
According to the foster mom of this 5 year old girl, she is a bit of a conundrum. Molly has been in and out of the foster care system many times since she was surrendered to the HSHC by her owner on February 2, ’10. The following comes from her current foster mom:
To be honest, Molly is a bit difficult. I love her, but she takes some getting used to. Molly, in my opinion, would do best being the only pet in the house. She gets very nervous and insecure around other animals, and tends to lash out at them when they approach her. That being said, she really is a sweet girl once you get to know her. She loves affection and comes when you call her. She has finally begun to crawl on my lap for some cuddle time, and she purrs like crazy. Molly has a stuffed toy she likes to play with- she lies on her back and hold it with her paws. When you throw her toy to her she likes to catch it! Molly sometimes “love-bites” when you're playing with her- I'm not sure if she gets confused between play time and cuddling or what, BUT she is getting better about biting. Sometimes she catches herself before she bites and licks you instead. She would probably be too nervous around smaller kids, but she does very well with my 12 year old. Miss Molly is going to need someone who is quiet, very patient and understanding.

I think if you asked Molly why she is moody it will be because she wants to find a home and stay there. Cats don’t like change and Molly has had a lot of change in her life. Molly has been spayed & she qualifies for the PAWS program.
Razoul: I’m feeling much better now!

Poor little Razoul came to us as a stray on January 5.
He is only 9 months old and it seems he has grown up here at the shelter and in foster homes. Being so young, he was unable to fight off the various viruses and bacteria that run rampant in a shelter environment. But now Razoul has returned to us feeling much more like a happy young cat is supposed to feel. He is now neutered and ready for a more permanent home. He is playful and very loving—despite being sick and having medicine given to him, he still enjoys human beings very much. He is truly a handsome young tabby with a bit of white on his nose and chest and feet. Please consider making this staff favorite part of your family.
  Chen: Inscrutable and Venerable
Take a look at this amazing fellow! He may be showing a mysterious expression while here at the HSHC, but his foster family figured him out right away!
Chen arrived as a stray on April 27 and soon moved in with his adoring foster family. Here’s what they have to say about him:

Chen is the MOST wonderful cat. We are not a "cat family"; however, we fell in love with him. While he stayed with us, we found out my children are allergic to cats or we would've adopted him ourselves. He has the most impressive set of whiskers, and therefore, we named him (my parents did, more specifically) Mr. Whiskers, Whiskers for short. He is extremely affectionate, and wanted to be with us wherever we went. He was also quite playful. We had a laser that he would chase all over the carpet and went quite wild for a few catnip mice we grabbed from the grocery one day. His tail is also very remarkable (major fluff). He is unbelievably tolerant. He let us use a Furminator dog brush to brush and remove the mats in the crook under his throat - purrred the whole time. He loves to be handled and purrrrrs like a freight train. We visited him at the shelter this last week (we miss him) and he was very different from his calm, content self that we'd remembered from his stay with us. He was very timid at the shelter.

It’s sad to see this 1 year old neutered boy revert to timid behavior when we know he is actually the life of the party! Won’t you please help Chen leave the shelter and join a loving family?

Sugar & Spice

I would like to present our latest sister act “Sugar & Spice”, although just between you and me Sugar is a little spicier and Spice is a little sweeter! It’s a sad story however. This pair of 6 year old Long- Haired Tortoiseshell girls was surrendered by their owner after living with her for 5 years. She said she no longer wanted the cats. When they were examined at that time they were infested with fleas and their coats were badly matted. We got them all cleaned up and feeling much better & they were adopted in January ’09. We were all very excited to see them find a happy new home.

However on May 20, ’10 they were found by a nice man at 191st and Promise road, lost and on their own. He brought them to us and sure enough we were able to identify them by their microchips and we knew that they had probably been abandoned. Not to sound like a “Debbie Downer”, but that is pretty harsh treatment for two older cats. You may notice that Spice has a little bump on her face just above her right eye. We don’t think this causes her any pain and it is a benign growth. The two girls are quite content to be with each other; as a matter of fact it would be cruel to split them up as they are BFF. They are basically very sweet spinsters with different personalities. Sugar can be a bit hissy when she does not want to be bothered and Spice has a slight tremor but a happy attitude. They are both beautiful girls with silky soft coats. They would dress up any room just by their elegant beauty. If you enjoy sister acts and are 55 or older, the girls qualify for the PAWS program. They have been spayed and are ready to change their address today!

Lester: Say hi to my brother Maxwell. Maxwell: Say hi to my brother Lester.

What one brother starts to say the other brother finishes. All you have to do is look at their striking grey green eyes and you can see that they are litter mates. For purposes of telling them apart, Maxwell has long hair and Lester has short. These handsome boys are 4 years and 1 month old, both front declawed, both neutered and both just a little confused. On May 18 their owner brought them to the HSHC and surrendered them because she had too many pets. This came as a complete surprise to the brothers, as they thought they were going to the vet. Being the affable, easy-going guys that they are, they made the best of things and settled into their new digs. On June 20 both boys were adopted and they were very excited to be starting a new chapter in their lives. Sadly, 2 days later they were returned because their new mistress was allergic to them. Now the boys are not stupid, but try explaining allergies to them and their eyes tend to glaze over.

So….. now they are biding their time playing double solitaire and chatting up the neighbors until someone else gives them a chance. The staff of the HSHC is absolutely crazy about these brothers! They are considered true cuddlebugs and the sweetest pair you could hope to meet. Lester was originally the shy one, but he is opening up and starting to play with the cats around them through the bars. They have always been indoor cats and demonstrated excellent manners. They get along swimmingly with kids and pets and the shelter will be glad to provide references! Don’t let their little hearts be broken again. If you are not allergic to cats, want two bonded brothers who can keep each other company during the day and have been searching for cuddly lovebugs then I would highly recommend you meet Lester and Maxwell. Just promise me you will adopt them “for keeps”. I don’t think they can take another rejection!

Sir Pepper You may know my brother, Roscoe.

He and I were surrendered to the HSHC on April 8 because our owner had too many animals. I think they call that “redundancy” in Britain.
Here they call it getting fired. Not to worry, I am currently staying at a wonderful foster home and the lady there is crazy about me and my roomie Tux! Here’s what she says about me:
Sir Pepper is older but still has some spunk. He is VERY petite and thin. His little paws are about the size of quarters. His fur is silky smooth and shiny. At first, he was a bit nervous at our house but has really come around to be a very loving kitty. When I sit down, he immediately curls up in my lap, purring the whole time. He plays with toys on occasion and really likes to play with Tux. He came from a house with multiple animals so he gets along with dogs and cats and would do fine with children. He does not have his claws in the front and I enjoy a daily “massage” from him. He likes to tell some stories, normally around feeding time. And he really enjoys his treats. His favorite place to lie is on a really soft blanket in the sun. He likes being picked up and hugged. Sir Pepper's face tells his story...he just wants to be loved.

There you have it folks! I’m a keeper! I’ve been neutered long ago so I am hoping someone who enjoys kitty massage will come and adopt me. I’d love to have my little buddy Tux come along too—we love each other! FYI: I qualify for the PAWS program.

  Roscoe…In my defense let me
start by saying I had nothing to do with the reason I was surrendered to the HSHC on April 8, ’10.
I had been living with my owner all my life and she decided that she had too many animals and I needed to go. I am an 8 year old DLH with a black coat and light gold eyes. My right eye has golden brown specks which distinguishes me from the other black cats. I have been declawed on my front paws and neutered. So I am ready to move out with you at a moment’s notice. Understandably, I was scared and a bit depressed when I first arrived. Like most of us, I got sick with an upper respiratory infection within a few days of living in such close quarters. But with time and the loving attention of the cattery staff I made a full recovery. I also discovered that the people here have my best interests at heart and I began to let down my guard and relax. They told the lady who writes these profiles that I am much more affectionate now; I lick their hands when they go to pet me and I thoroughly enjoy a nice cuddle. I also qualify for the PAWS program which is an incentive for those over 55 to adopt an equally “experienced” pet for a reduced fee. With all this in my favor, I would hope that I don’t have to live here much longer!
Trey There is something about the presence of a cat... that seems to take the bite out of being alone. ~Louis J. Camuti

I would like to say that there is something about the presence of a human that seems to take the bite out of being alone.
I started out my life as a beloved pet of a human being and when we were separated, I thought my heart would break. I am a 4 year old male with a combination of white and cocoa brown tabby markings. I was declawed on my front paws and neutered long ago. Although a nice person found me and brought me here so that my owner could find me, this never came to pass. Being used to a home, loving humans to play with and plenty of windows from which to gaze at the world, I find being in the shelter is disappointing. Not that they are not kind here. I have plenty of food and a soft bed. But I just miss the comfort of a warm lap in the evening and my own human beings. I am a curious and playful sort of cat with plenty of enthusiasm for one-on-one time with the cattery staff. Without having a house to roam and the opportunity to stretch my legs, I’ve put on some weight. I sincerely regret this as I have always taken pride in my appearance. I noticed that I have lost my enthusiasm for hunting as there is nothing to hunt in my small cage. My fondest wish is that someone will see my photo and decide that I am the cat for him (or her). Please don’t make me stay here much longer; I worry that I’ll forget what it means to be someone’s pet.
Tallie: I didn’t think I’d be coming back here!

I’d like to say I’m glad to be back, but I am not.
I started out my life as a little lost kitten back in September 07. At that time I was covered in fleas and scared to death! I was young and cute so I was adopted in about 20 days! But on May 18, ’10 my owner could no longer afford to keep me and surrendered me to the HSHC. So I’m ba-ak. I am a 3 year old girl, spayed and more than ready to get out of my cage. I am what you call a Torbie which means Tortoiseshell coloring in a Tabby pattern. I happen to think I am strikingly beautiful, with a golden cast to my coat. I admit that I am slow to warm up, but I am sweet and affectionate if I get to know you. One thing that I found annoying was having to live in the kitty condominiums of cattery 2. There were just too many cats in very close proximity. Not my cup of tea! I’m much happier in my “studio apartment for one”. But I would be happier still if you were to come to adopt me and let me live with you!
  Zippy/Zoey—A sad little story

Back in early February 08, this little girl was surrendered to the shelter due to landlord issues.
She had just given birth to 3 little kittens and was still nursing them. Her babies found homes, but Zippy was left all alone. She’s about 2 years old and has a beautiful face. Her coat is all shiny black except for a little tuft of white at her throat. She has luminous hazel green eyes and the gentlest personality. Zoey loves to be held and cuddled. She is a very affect-tionate girl & enjoys other cats and children. She is quick to come to the front of her cage to visit with people. We know that Zoey will make someone a very sweet companion. Because she is a bit nervous about being in the shelter, Zoey finds comfort hiding in small spaces. But when she goes home with you, she’ll be grateful for some walking around room!
Zoey Lee “Stop the world, I want to get off!”
Can’t a girl catch a break? You see that picture of me in ’08? I was scared to death of what was going to happen to me.
I had been a very good mother, if I do say so myself, and I was hoping I would be adopted into my forever home. But it was not to be. I was adopted in July of ’08 and I lived with her until she surrendered me back to the shelter on March 29, ’10. I have had several homes now; the first one let me become a stray until my second one took me in. I have also had several names including Zippy, Zoey and now Zoey Lee. Frankly you can call me Zippety-Doo-Dah if you will just adopt me and keep me!

Even though black is slimming, after all this time I’ve lost my girlish figure. I could stand to lose a bit of my 5 year old spread. Of course I have been spayed so I won’t have to worry about raising kittens. I am still really great with kids and pets & I am still a loving and friendly gal. I’m just a bit older now and a bit disillusioned. I now qualify for the PAWS program! Can you believe it?
Callie: Jealousy injures us with the dagger of self-doubt. ~Terri Guillemets

You know, I think that’s really why I ended up here as an owner surrender. I am a 7 year old long haired Calico and have lived with my owner all my life. Everything was hunky-dory until other pets began joining our household. One day while watching my owner make goo-goo eyes over someone else, my feelings were really hurt. Because humans don’t speak feline (do they even try?) the only way I could let her know I was feeling neglected was to use the carpet for my litter box.
So on May 3, ’10 I was “relocated” to the HSHC. Can you blame me for being jealous and feeling insecure? Up until then I thought life was terrific—my owner even trained me to walk on a leash! I have already been spayed and people say that I am a natural beauty. I have a bit of a picky palate, so some days I don’t eat much. Due to my previous experience, I would like to request my new owner has no other cats in the home. I’m a bit too old to have to learn to share affection. I qualify for the PAWS program in case you’d like to adopt me for a reduced fee.

Larissa: Mother Cat of the Year- 2010

This photo of our heroic mother shows her in the early stages of her pregnancy. Larissa is a lovely 2 year old Calico with golden eyes.
On March 8, a concerned Fishers resident found Larissa looking for a warm place to stay and brought her to the HSHC for safekeeping. On examination it appeared that Larissa was “with kitten” and we found a wonderful foster home where she could live for the remainder of her pregnancy. Larissa gave birth to 5 kittens and was an excellent mother. She was such a nurturer that whenever the shelter had some orphaned kittens in need of a mother, Larissa was more than happy to add them to her brood. Her milk kept a total of 23 kittens nourished and growing. Whew! According to her foster mom Larissa does not enjoy being picked up (can you blame her?) but that she is very loving. Obviously Larissa has a very healthy maternal instinct. She is not fond of the other cats in the house and “had no qualms about charging at the dog protectively after she had her kittens”. This behavior is very typical of a mother animal caring for her babies and is likely to improve once she’s “off duty”. I would say that this little lady deserves a well earned rest from motherhood and should find a loving forever home where she never has to care for kittens again. Larissa wears the crown of Mother Cat of 2010 proudly, if a little wearily! Wouldn’t you like to spoil this sweetheart after all she’s done?
Butters Injuries may be forgiven, but not forgotten.
Aesop

This sweet boy has had such a sad turn of events in his life.
He was surrendered by his owner on April 6 because she said she could no longer take care of him. Upon examination it was obvious that Butters had been injured some time ago. His lower lip and chin were missing! However this did not prevent him from demonstrating his loving and gentle personality. Nor did it prevent him from thoroughly enjoying his food! A visit to the veterinarian revealed that Butters had a fractured jaw, tooth loss and his chin had been “degloved”—meaning the skin had been peeled off. There was scar tissue covering the bone, but just barely. We authorized the doctor to complete surgery to give him a more workable jaw and now he looks much better.

Butters is a true cuddle bug and enjoys attention and affection! He will “talk” to you to get you to come over and visit with him. He has the prettiest, softest buff and white coat and amber eyes. Note the curly tufts of hair coming out of his ears! Butters is 6 years old and had not been neutered before coming to the HSHC, but he has now been altered. He qualifies for the PAWS program. Butters does not hold a grudge about his injury but we think he deserves to be a cherished pet for the rest of his life—this may help him forget.

If you would like to donate to Butters surgery fund, please go to the HSHC website & click the Donate button.

The Three Faces of Minerva

On June 8th, 2008 I was unceremoniously dumped and abandoned at the HSHC. This came as quite a shock as I thought that I was a much loved pet. After all I am only about 2 years old, spayed and declawed on my front paws. Someone cared enough to have me spayed! Anyway, no use crying over spilt milk! Ha, ha! So the people at the shelter found a wonderful foster home for me as there is just about no square inch left to house another animal! My foster mom has been the best thing to happen to me in a long time. She says that I am very sweet and affectionate. I am a classic Mackerel Tabby with light green eyes. My coat is as soft as a bunny rabbits which is a good thing because I am crazy about being petted! My foster home includes 3 children, 2 dogs and 10 cats and I get along beautifully with everyone. Here is a sample of some of my cute characteristics:

I come when called (often meowing), I arch my back when petted (it tickles!), I love attention, like to sleep on my humans laps, backs, or heads (which ever part is available for any length of uninterrupted quality time), I love to play with cat teasers, laser pointers, or any unsuspecting bug, and I love to eat spaghetti. Also I have quite a vocabulary which includes all sorts of meows, mews, and purrs which I skillfully utilize when bored, excited, or just for fun.

So I hope this will entice you to call the shelter at 774-1263 to set up a time to visit with me!
