Featured Dogs:

My name is Amlynn and I’m a 3-4 yr old, spayed Bull Terrier mix. I am a VERY sweet girl with super cute bat ears. I like to snuggle up very close and give kisses while you rub my belly. I would be a wonderful pet for any family as long as I receive training and have a strong leader who understands I like to be in charge some times. I would really like to sit in your lap and stare up at you adoringly if that’s okay with you. I am very well behaved in my kennel and would like a big, fluffy bed to lie on (preferably pink….it’s my color). I don’t need much…your love, your patience, your time, and don’t forget that big, fluffy bed.

Love,
AmLynn

Amlynn is staying with our friends at Dog Dayz located at 15310 Herriman Blvd in Noblesville just north of 146th Street and SR 37. To visit with Amlynn, call 773-4500.

Amlynn was sponsored during our holiday program so she comes with a FREE training package valued at $150 compliments of Dog Dayz and her adoption fee is reduced to just $65.

Mozart is a 1 year old, neutered Cattle Dog/Terrier mix. He is about an “11” on the happy dog scale! Mozart loves to play, play, play. He needs a home where he will get plenty of exercise and attention. He needs some obedience training to learn his doggy manners too.

Mozart arrived here as puppy and has grown up at our shelter. He has been waiting for a home longer than most of our canine residents. He just needs someone to give him a chance. Because of his size and strength, we do recommend he go to a home with children mature enough to handle his energy level.

Mozart is now staying with our friends at Dog Dayz located at 15310 Herriman Blvd in Noblesville just north of 146th Street and SR 37. To visit with Mozart, call 773-4500.

Mozart was sponsored during our holiday program so he comes with a FREE training package valued at $150 compliments of Dog Dayz and his adoption fee is reduced to just $65.
Shelbie is a 1 year old American Staffordshire Terrier mix with big, beautiful bat ears. She is a very loving dog who like many others in the kennel, is extremely nervous in this environment. Shelbie is well mannered, but she needs someone who will patient, yet firm, in helping her regain her confidence while learning basic obedience.

Because Shelbie is very shy and unsure of new people, she would be best suited in a home with adults only. Shelbie seems to warm up more quickly to women than men, although her previous owner was a single male whom she misses terribly.

Shelbie needs to be the only pet in the home. You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.
Snoopy is a 2 year old, neutered Border Collie/ Terrier mix who arrived with the scar you see on his back. It has healed, but hair will probably never grow back there…and who cares, right! Snoopy is handsome anyway not to mention what a lover-boy he is.

Snoopy is has been waiting for a home longer than most of our canine residents and is anxious to start his life with his new family. He loves to play with toys and considers himself to be a lap dog.

Snoopy does have a lot of energy, so he is best suited in a home with children mature enough to handle his strength and size. Snoopy should go to a feline free home.

Snoopy was sponsored during our holiday program so he comes with a FREE training package valued at $150 compliments of Dog Dayz and his adoption fee is reduced to just $65.

Snoopy is now staying with our friends at Dog Dayz located at 15310 Herriman Blvd in Noblesville just north of 146th Street and SR 37. To visit with Snoopy, call 773-4500.

Maya is a 2 year old, brindle and black Labrador Retriever/ Terrier mix. Her nick name at the shelter is ‘chunky monkey’…..as she is not exactly a petite girl….but she has these really short legs which just make her adorable!

So yes, Maya needs a little exercise…but the good news is, she’s really playful and energetic, so getting her on an exercise routine shouldn’t be hard at all.

Maya plays fetch and loves toys….but what she loves even more is having her belly rubbed. She rolls over with all fours straight up so you can get to the entire belly region…but until she loses a little weight, it will take her a few seconds to successfully roll back over onto her feet. :) Her sweet face just pulls you in. We absolutely adore her. You will too.

Stella is a 3 year old American Staffordshire Terrier who has got to be one of the most affectionate dogs on the planet! She likes to snuggle right up next to you and shows her appreciation with endless kisses. Stella would let you scratch her back and behind her ears all day long if you want and will repay you with a big hug…yes, she will give you a full fledged hug.

Stella has very good manners and walks well on a leash. She knows the command “sit” and she is gentle when taking treats. She keeps her kennel very clean so that is a good indication that she may be housetrained.

Stella is currently Heartworm positive and can begin treatment to cure her condition if she can find a financial sponsor to pay for her treatment. She will also need a foster home where she can rest and recuperate after her treatment. She would love for her foster home to become her forever home too!

Stella is very special and deserves a family who will give her all the love she longs to give in return. You will absolutely fall in love with her. Come see Stella…and experience one of her signature hugs (& kisses).

This just in! A very nice family has sponsored Stella's heartworm treatment, so all she needs now is a foster home! If you're interested in fostering or adopting Stella, please email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com or visit the shelter.

Flash is a very handsome 2 year old, neutered American Staffordshire Terrier mix. He is an energetic boy who loves his toys and to play with his humans. As you can see from his picture, he’s very inquisitive and he has fu man chu whiskers that drop down from his chin. Those cheeks are squeezable!

Flash is housetrained and very intelligent as he will happily show off the commands "sit" and "down". He is not a big fan of kitties so he is best suited in a feline-free home. He is also best suited in a home with older children who can handle his strength and energy.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Bunny—More Than Just a Pretty Face…and Ears

Bunny is quite the little charmer.
All you see at first are her “rabbit ears”--You wouldn’t want her to sit in front of you at the movies! Another reason she deserves her name is that when she wants to play, Bunny will hop around just like her namesake. But on closer examination this 3 year old little Pit Bull Terrier mix is a real sweetie; she gets along with other dogs and all people. She loves attention and giving enthusiastic kisses. Bunny is a little bow-legged and a bit on the thin side, but she has a heart of gold. She was a stray, so meals may have been few and far between before coming here. All she needs is a loving owner to take her home, fatten her up and give her some TLC. How about letting this Bunny hop into your family?
Tika—“Born in a shelter and still waiting.”

Tika was born at the Humane Society almost 2 years ago.
She was adopted only to find herself back at the shelter a year later, irresponsibly abandoned by her owner. But this beautiful girl does not give up. She is determined to find her forever home. We’re determined to help her.

Tika will be 2 years old in August…and our goal is for her to celebrate her birthday with her new family. She is spayed and house trained, not to mention one of the most gorgeous red nosed Pit Bull Terriers we’ve ever seen. Her smile is contagious, and she loves everyone. Tika plays well with other dogs, loves kids, and could put any Labrador to shame with her game of fetch!

Tika is playful, energetic, and like most bully breeds, a loyal and loving lap dog. She is incredibly intelligent and would make an amazing family pet. Because of her strength and energy level, we recommend she find a family with children 5 years and up.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

You gotta love a dog with a great sense of humor!

Well that’s Shadow…
a 2 year old brindle Mastiff mix with a great outlook on life. Shadow is a happy and energetic boy who always seems to have a smile on his face. He arrived at the shelter when his previous family didn't have enough time to care for him…a common theme these days.

He loves people of all ages but his energy may be a bit much for little ones, so we think he is best suited in a home with older children (10 yrs and up as a guideline).

He is intelligent and would benefit from obedience training to improve his doggie manners...but his silly antics are easily forgiven when he looks up with that big happy face. This guy will definitely be the class clown in his obedience class!
Tucker is a handsome 1 year old fawn and white Hound/ American Pit Bull Terrier mix with soulful brown eyes. Tucker is a very friendly and outgoing boy who likes to show off the commands sit and shake…he’s only a couple doggie treats away from learning his “down”. He is very attentive and affectionate toward his humans and he would love to find a home where he gets plenty of exercise and love.

Tucker is still a puppy at heart and his energy level and zest for treats are such that he is best suited in a home with older children. That puppy in him needs some obedience training and a strong leadership example to be his Obi Won.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.
Cleo—“A Survivor.”

Cleo is a 4 year old, spayed American Staffordshire Terrier with a story to tell. Cleo is very fortunate that a concerned citizen picked her up when she was spotted wandering in a very busy parking lot one cold night in February. Cleo had been attacked by another dog and has scars on her face from this. Cleo has probably been on her own for a long time but she is very affectionate and loves people. She is very intelligent and already knows the commands "sit", "shake" and "beg".

Cleo looks wise with a bit of gray in her face and her eyes speak volumes to what she really wants out of this life. Her demands are few: someone to love her, someone she can love in return, and a safe, warm place to sleep (toys would be good too.)

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Sadie—“Sadie, Sadie, Married Lady” (she’s a Barbra Streisand fan)

As you can see Sadie has really hammed it up for the camera and given her cheesiest smile.
This 8 years young Lab/Terrier mix is still full of life and hoping to find a new family. Her old family surrendered her to the shelter because they couldn’t afford her anymore. Since Sadie has been around the block more than a few times, she figures they just were tired of her.

But just look at her brindley coat, subtle graying hair & big brown eyes. This is a face to love! She is housetrained and spayed & ready to pack her overnight case and move in with you. She gets along with kids and dogs, but prefers a quieter type home. She’s a good girl and promises to be the best pet she can be. Remember: Shelter dogs try harder to please! Now if you don’t mind her breaking out into show tunes once in a while, Sadie would make a very nice laid-back friend with whom to watch “The Way We Were”.

Because Sadie is a Senior she qualifies for the PAWS program. If you are 55 or older you may be able to adopt her for $45. Ask at the desk—but don’t tell Sadie. She’s in denial about getting older.
Carly—“Please take me away from here.”

Carly is a 1 1/2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier mix who is so frightened in the kennel.
Even though she’s scared, she still seems to muster up the courage to come to the front of her kennel and reach out to her visitors as if to say please take me home. Take me away from here and love me. And we have no doubt that Carly will return the favor with unlimited unconditional love. It doesn’t take long before she crawls into your lap expressing her gratitude with kisses. She is very petite and gentle when taking treats. Carly will make someone a wonderful companion.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.
This Dane isn’t Just Great, He’s Fabulous!

Dane is a 5 year old, absolutely gorgeous Shepherd mix.
You can’t tell me his smile doesn’t bring one to your face. Dane is a very attentive and affectionate. He would be an extremely loyal pet. We are currently working with Dane on not being protective over his food bowl, so we recommend a home without small children.

Dane is currently Heartworm positive and can begin treatment to cure his condition as soon as we find a foster (and hopefully permanent) home for him. We are so grateful to our donors for contributing toward his heartworm treatment which is totally sponsored.

Dane also qualifies for our P.A.W.S. Program - Partnering Animals With Seniors. If you are age 55 or older, please contact the shelter to find out how you can adopt Dane for a reduced fee. If you are interested in fostering or adopting Dane, please call 317-773-4974 or email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com.

Duncan

No, he didn’t just eat a grape Popsicle.

Duncan is a 4 year old male red Chow Chow/Fur Ball mix who manages to keep a smile on his face even though he’s not sure why he ended up in this noisy place. He is very docile, gentle and walks well on a leash.

It's hard to imagine how Duncan can stay so upbeat when he probably isn't feeling 100%, but he is staying positive and hoping he might steal your heart…he has certainly stolen ours.

Thanks to one of our generous donors, Duncan's heartworm treatment has been sponsored! All he needs now is a foster (and hopefully permanent) home so she can begin his treatment. If you would like to foster or adopt Duncan, please email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com or visit the shelter.

Arianna—What a face!

Arianna is a 1 ½ year old fawn and white Boxer/Terrier mix who is a happy little girl that gets so excited when people visit with her it is hard for her to contain her enthusiasm!

She is very intelligent and knows the commands "sit" and "shake", so we have no doubts that if a family took her through training, she would graduate magna cum laude! Arianna is very fearful in the kennel, so we’re featuring her in our lobby where she is much more relaxed. She is best suited in a home with children over 5 years of age due to her energy level.
Jezebel—Could You Love Me?

Jezebel is a 2 year old Staffordshire Terrier mix with sadness and longing in her eyes to find someone to love her. The HSHC staff has certainly fallen in love with her, but it’s not the same since we have to spread our love among so many. Jezebel wants her own human to love! She is very well mannered and knows the commands "sit" and "down". Jezzy wants nothing more than to please her people…a common bully trait.

Jezebel is playful and acts like a puppy at times yet she can be a bit sensitive to rough-housing, so she would be best suited in a home with children over the age of 10.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Neva is a 2 year old, spayed Husky with unique light brown eyes. Neva is quite the socialite...this girl has never met a stranger. She always has a smile to share with everyone that walks by. She also likes to stand on her back feet with her front paws stretched out on her kennel door as if she's ready to give a big hug to the next person lucky person who decides to visit with her.

Neva is a real sweetheart that is looking for an active family who will play with her and make sure she gets plenty of exercise. She also wants to be the only pet in the home…nothing wrong with wanting to be the center of attention!

Wally—It Has Been a Long Road

Wally is a 2 year old Foxhound who has just completed a heartworm treatment.
His foster family said he is housetrained, knows the “sit” command and takes treats gently.

Wally is a very affectionate boy who needs a strong leader to teach him obedience and good doggy manners. He is very active and playful, so he needs plenty of room to play and exercise. Due to his exuberance, he is best suited in a home with mature children (teens).

Wally originally arrived at our facility in September of 2007…so he has been waiting a very long time to find his permanent home. He’s hoping his wait will be over this spring so he can run and chase lightning bugs with his family. You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Chili: “Make mine con carne, no beans please!”

This little hot tamale is a 1 year old Shepherd mix with lots of get up and go! He has the most soulful face and big brown eyes. He came to the shelter as a stray back in March and he is hoping somebody who likes to run or take long walks would adopt him.

He’s full of energy and is itching to get out into the world and explore. Chili loves to play but he can get carried away, so he’ll need firm but loving direction. He might view young children as lower members of the “pack” and not treat them with the same respect as he would adults. With the proper training, Chili can become a very nice family dog. Help Chili become the very best dog he can be & give him a new loving home.

Cyrus

I’ll be the first to admit that I am one confused dog. Life hasn’t been easy for me in my 4 years on earth. I was picked up and brought to this shelter in March and things have been so hard to figure out. It’s noisy in the kennel, people come and go, but I never get to leave with them. Between you & me, this place is really scary to me. I know that the people here are doing the best they can to make me feel safe, but I just wish I could go home with someone where it’s quiet and peaceful and I could finally relax. Little kids are so bouncy and loud and I just can’t handle all their energy. I’d love to find a human who would let me be their only pet and could take their time with me. I really am a very nice guy; I just don’t like to be rushed. Easy does it is my motto! I think that’s cause I’m part Chocolate Lab. Some folks think my other half is Weimaraner but I don’t really know. I do like this picture the lady took of me; I think it shows my true personality. Doesn’t my coat look shiny? And how about those pearly whites? You know, I just need a little luck to find that nice human who can see that I am a good boy. Thanks for listening.

Milee

As you can see, Milee is all girl. No, she’s not wearing lipstick; she is just giving you a raspberry! She likes how her tongue matches her ears. Pink is her color you know. Milee started out life as a stray and was brought to this shelter in November. She got adopted but returned because she had a couple of accidents in the house. In her defense, she’s only a year old and she is crate trained! Crate training works best when the crate is used (heavy sigh).

It may take a little more work but Milee’s a smart girl. She’ll get the hang of it. Her former owner said that she’s very good with children and other dogs. She knows the commands “sit, stay, shake and down“. This friendly and outgoing Pit Bull/Hound mix has been spayed so she’s ready to come home with you today. Please give our little love-bug another chance at family life.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Caleb: Wanted for Terminal Cuteness, Possession of a Deadly Weapon (Tongue) & Stealing Hearts.

Caleb is only 8 months old but already has a record with the shelter. He came in as a stray in November 07 and was adopted. But in March 08, his owner surrendered him back to the shelter, allegedly due to allergies. The detective on the case learned that although Caleb is crate trained and a very good boy, he has a seizure disorder which is well controlled by medication. The suspect is a liver & white Pointer/Beagle mix, so he’ll be skilled in field work and sniffing out treats. He’s been neutered, so we don’t think he’s got a girlfriend. Shelter attendants say that Caleb is well liked by fellow inmates and is a likely candidate for parole. If you would like to give this pup a new start in life, you may take him home with you today. Everyone deserves a second chance.

THOR—God of Thunder & Pink Noses

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Thor and I am 6 years old and I am a yellow lab mix. I am great with small children, friendly to all I meet, and already housebroken. My education consists of “sit”, “shake”, “down” and being gentle. I don’t want to have a pity party, but I used to live with a family, most of my life in fact. But I have this little food allergy problem and I don’t think they felt they could deal with it. So, I ended up here at the shelter. It’s rough. A guy gets set in his ways and used to a quiet place to lay his head. Honestly, I only need a diet food and some medication and I’m A-OK! I’m not one to brag, but I am a great canine. Don’t let my age influence you in whether you look at me or not. COM’ on, you gotta admit I’m cute!

PARKER—Too Big for his Britches!

This 4 month old Shepherd mix is adorable, but he is under the impression that he knows best about everything.
He came to us as a stray in January and was adopted in February. His owner returned him to the shelter because he didn’t want to share his food with the kids. Parker thinks that he is the leader of any pack in which he might find himself. This does not mean that he won’t make a perfectly nice pet, but he needs a firm owner who will not let Parker get away with bad behavior. Just like a toddler who thinks he can throw a fit and get everything he wants, Parker needs some “parenting”. Part of Parker’s problem is that he is VERY SMART! He learns new things in a snap. He’ll just need reminders to keep up the good work. With obedience training, consistency and affection he will grow up to be a member of the pack, not the leader! Parker is suited to a family with teenaged children or one or two adults. Help him become all the dog he can be!
Spreewell—Got Milk………….Bones?

Nope he’s not a Guernsey cow, he’s a dog! Sprewell is a 3 year old American Pit Bull Terrier.
He’s a big boy and fairly strong. He was returned to his owner as a stray several times and now he is residing here at the shelter. He is not only handsome, but also friendly and eager for attention. Everyone loves his baby-pink nose and muzzle. Sprewell has been known to enjoy his food so much that he can get a little cranky if you mess with his dish. You must be 21 to adopt Sprewell and it will be important to be firm & consistent in your training techniques. He is a sweet boy and deserves to be in a home that will love him and provide him with playtime, exercise and a soft place to sleep. Also, Sprewell would really appreciate it if people would stop making “cow” jokes. He’s all dog; he only looks like a cow.
PAX—Does anyone have a mint?

For only being 2 years old, this Mastiff mix has had a tumultuous life. He was surrendered to us in August 07 because they couldn’t afford him. He was here until he was adopted in October 07. He was surrendered again due to his owner moving away. Now what’s a dog to think?! “Is it my breath?”

His latest owner renamed him “Chopper” but he much prefers Pax. He is house trained, knows how to “sit” & “shake” and is very good with kids. Due to his size, he might be better suited to children 10 and up. He’ll be the first to tell you that he wants to be the only pet in the household. He’s big enough to give you the love of several smaller pets. Pax is neutered so he can come home with you today!

Altoids included.

BOYD—“Atten-shun! Eyes Front!”

Sergeant Boyd reporting for duty. This young recruit is 1.5 years old, a Rat Terrier male who enlisted here at the shelter back in March 08. He was aimlessly wandering the streets, but once he joined the ranks here, he has been an outstanding member of the company. Boyd is skilled at leash walking, licking and snuggling, and sitting at attention (even his ears). He loves every one and would be more than willing to leave his post here and join your battalion. Boyd is starting to lose faith that someone will come for him—he’s getting a bit depressed and showing signs of stress. If you have room in your bivouac and heart for this brave little guy, please come and visit soon!

OTHELLO—“Look what I can do!”

Even though I have a very fancy name, I mostly just like to have fun! I think I was performing my death defying flying dog trick in this photo. If I had to describe myself in one word, it would have to be happy! I am 3 years old and about as big as I’m ever going to be. Everyone thinks that I am a combo of a beagle and a boxer. I really like the way I look—I’m a confident guy. I know how to “sit” when a human tells me to. I would love to learn some more things if someone will help me. I can even sing for your attention! I’ve been neutered, whatever that means. A nice lady brought me to this shelter in April. They said I was a “stray”. It’s not so bad here, but it’s just not as nice as the place I used to live when I was a puppy—I can still sort of remember it. It had children to play with and treats and a nice dog bed. It was wonderful. It would be terrific if a nice family would come and take me home with them. Until then, I’ll keep doing my tricks and hoping someone will look at me!

T-BONE—“Has anybody seen the steak sauce?”

Take a look at this 1 year old Shepherd/Rottie mix. He is sooo handsome! He was surrendered to the shelter by his owner. He said T-Bone had behavior issues. According to our staff, he is very shy, but is coming out of his shell. He just loves to be outside playing or taking a walk. T-Bone is house trained, so we know he is smart enough to learn his doggie manners. He can’t be expected to behave if he has not gone to obedience classes or been worked with. T-Bone has been neutered so he is ready to go home with you today. Even though we say he shouldn’t go home with children under 10, once T-Bone is settled and comfortable in a home environment, he may be relaxed enough to get along with younger kids. T-Bone deserves a second chance at life and maybe a piece of steak once in a while!

Barnaby—“It has been quite the year.”

It’s hard to believe I’m only a year old. I
was surrendered by my family at just 8 months old where my new friends found out I had heartworm disease. They were surprised that I had this so young and I heard them all saying what a shame it was that my owner hadn’t taken better care of me. I remember the day I arrived at the shelter because I was so scared. That noisy place with all those other dogs was just too much for me. That’s when a local rescue group took me into a foster home so I could have my heartworm treatment in peace.

Now, I’m all better and neutered. I’m back at the Humane Society and ready to find my permanent home. I am choosey about the other dogs I like to play with. No one ever really taught me what I should or shouldn’t do, so I need someone to be my leader. I need a family to love. Please come see me. I’m in that noisy kennel again…so the sooner the better!

Love,

Barnaby
Emmy Lou— “Um, I can see the nail clippers in your hand!”

Seriously, I’m on to you.
I’m a smart girl, so you can carry those things behind your back…in your pocket and try to distract me with a treat…but my momma didn’t raise no fool! And Emmy Lou is right…she is a very intelligent young lady…and she really does quite well getting her nails trimmed. She is a 2 year old American Bulldog mix with big brown eyes that just melt your heart.

She arrived as a stray in April and seemed relieved to find us. With a full tummy and lots of love, and yes even a nail trim, Emmy Lou just ate up the attention. She is sometimes shy at first, but warms up quickly. Emmy Lou is a very special girl.
Santana—An Angel in Dog’s Clothing

In Spanish, Santana means “saint-like” and this is a good fit for this loveable 3 year old American Bulldog-American Staffordshire mix. S
he came to us as a stray and quickly became a staff favorite. Santana is gentle and sweet natured. For example, when she arrived here she was frightened by all the noise in the kennel, so she stayed in a crate in the lobby. On top of her crate was another crate housing a very noisy little Min. Pin. Santana never made a peep! She just slept and waited for someone to pay her a little attention. Her lovely fawn and white coat covers her very thin frame (you can see her ribs in the photo). It is stressful for an animal to stay at the shelter. Santana needs to find her forever home where she can relax and put on a little weight. She is such a good girl; we know there is someone out there who is looking for a dog just like her. She plays well with others and has unlimited amounts of love to share. You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.
COCO—Loves Channel, Bubble Baths, & Aromatherapy

To look at this 1 year old Shepherd/Chow mix you would never know that she’s a girly girl.
She had been living with a family all of her life but she kept escaping so they surrendered her to the shelter. We think she was just trying to find a Doggie Spa. Coco is housetrained and knows how to “sit” and “shake”. We don’t think she has received any training nor has she been socialized enough…and that is why she protects her food and is sensitive about being touched. If she is given firm but loving guidance, and lots of patience, Coco will become a very well adjusted young lady.
Coco should be an “only pet” and only families with teenage children should consider adopting her. She is a beautiful dog who deserves a second chance at life with a family who will set her up for success with a fenced in yard. Scented candles are optional.
NOODLES—Has Ooodles of Potential.

Get a load of this fella. He’s a 2 years old Lab-mix who checked in to the shelter in mid-April.
He was a stray, and he was starved. After several trips to the salad bar, we decided that he needs to learn how to share and trust that no one is going to take away his lunch.

Noodles is long on looks and charm and a little short in the manners department. Like any youngster who has had to fend for himself in this big and often unkind world, Noodles needs some TLC, training and guidance to find his inner good dog.

He has lots of energy and can be sort of “bouncy”, so kids 10 and up would be better suited to handle his enthusiasm. You can see the good dog in his eyes just waiting to be found and loved. And besides, who doesn’t like Noodles?

Lucy—“Have you seen Fred or Ethel?”

This 10 month old Bassett/Shepherd mix thinks somebody may have some ‘splainin’ to do.
She has been adopted by two different families and returned both times. We are not exactly sure why this is. Lucy is not talking. She is a social little girl who is just fine with other dogs. Perhaps it’s because she basically doesn’t understand kids. They move a bit too fast for her and perhaps they tried to take away her toys or food. We know Lucy is smart; she is housetrained and has learned some commands. But she has enough Bassett in her to be a little headstrong. Since she’s still a pup, she can’t be expected to automatically know her doggie manners. With some training and a patient owner, Lucy should be a fine companion. You can see by the photo that she is just too cute for words! Love those short legs and big head. You gotta love this redhead! Lucy has never had an owner who kept her for more than 2 or 3 months. She needs a chance to become the dog she’s meant to be. She’s spayed so she can come live with you today. And if you see Ricky, let him know Lucy’s looking for him at the Tropicana.

Holden—The Catcher in the Rye

Like Holden Caulfield, this boy has had a rough life.
As a pup, he lived with us at the old shelter. He was adopted and moved away. In April, Johnson County Animal Control called us. They had found him wandering around, scanned him for a microchip and saw our name. That is how we were reunited with this sweet boy. When he arrived Holden was in terrible shape, filthy, underweight, and full of cuts and bruises. Sadly, we also discovered he is heartworm positive. He’s only 3 years old and not a very big guy. Though his paperwork says “lab mix”, it looks like he’s more of a Heinz-57. He has a blue cast to his coat, which is looking much nicer these days. He was obviously neglected by his owner, maybe even mistreated. Despite all this, he’s a friendly boy. He can be protective of his food bowl, but if I were homeless and starving, I’d guard mine too! For this reason, Holden would be best suited to a home with adults & 16+ kids.

Holden can begin treatment to cure his heartworm condition if he can find a financial sponsor to pay for his treatment. He will also need a foster home where he can rest and recuperate after his treatment. Holden would love for his foster home to become his forever home too! If you would like to sponsor Holden’s heartworm treatment, please email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com or see a staff member.
Caprice—“I’ve had a craving for pickles and ice cream.”

In April Caprice was picked up as a stray and brought to the humane society.
She is about 3 years old and is likely a Retriever/Shepherd mix. When she arrived, she began exhibiting behavior that led us to believe she might be pregnant…more specifically, she was trying to get her hot dog squeaky toy to nurse. As adorable as that was, we thought we’d best have her checked out by a vet who confirmed that Caprice was dealing with a false pregnancy and was subsequently spayed.

Though a little down in the dumps at first, Caprice has bounced back better than ever. You can see by her photo that she is feeling just great and is looking forward to a fresh start. She mentioned that she is hoping for a family who likes to take long walks and throw a ball around. She is a smart girl and knows the commands “sit” & “down”, but with further practice she would like to learn more tricks and possibly take up needlepoint. She likes kids and adults alike, but still has a soft spot for squeaky toys.

Glacier-- “Is it just me, or does white seem to go with everything?”

I am a 4 year old German Shepherd mix—although to look at me you’d swear I was a pure breed.
It’s been a little over a month since I was brought here. I was roaming around, scrounging up a little something to eat when I was picked up. You can see by my ear that life has not always been easy for me. I’ve been out on my own for a while now and I sure appreciate a soft bed and regular meals. If it would be possible, I am hoping to find a friendly human being to bunk with. I just love it when someone pets me and gives me attention; I go all mushy inside. I have heard that other dogs in here have found great owners and got a fresh start on life. Boy what I wouldn’t give to do that! I am intelligent and a laid back kind of guy. I admit I don’t like to have my feet messed with, never have—never will. Don’t even think of puttin’ polish on my nails. Gives me the heebie-jeebies!

If I could order up my ideal new home, it would have nice adults, older kids, a place to run, plenty of exercise, treats and lots of love. I promise not to clash with your color scheme.
Nova—“Whatever it was, I didn’t do it!”

Butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth.
This angelic looking 2 year old girl is quite the little actress. She’s a Collie/Shepherd mix who came to us as a stray in April. She is a little shy until she gets to know you. Then she’ll really ham it up! Nova loves attention. She enjoys posing for the photographer and hopes to find a career in pet food advertising. We have to admit that she is a good looking girl. Nova is a bit sensitive when it comes to her feet. It’s not that they are too big; it’s just that she doesn’t like them to be touched. For this reason, she would be happiest in a home with children over the age of 5. She says “The young ones just don’t understand personal space.” Please give this little Meryl Steep wannabe a chance at stardom (even if only in your house!).
Benny-A bit of a baby when it comes to being “Home Alone”

The Good News:
We are confident that the right family is out there just waiting to adopt this 2-year-old Flat-Coated Retriever. Benny is a very friendly, gentle guy who knows how to “sit” on command. He is such a sweet tempered dog that he would be fine with all children. He is neutered, house trained and is ready to master lots more tricks. During temperament testing he was obedient and well mannered. His soft black coat is frosted with white on his chest. It’s hard to see his eyes in the photo because he is so dark, but they are soulful and eager to please. And Benny is just as loveable in person as he is in the picture!

The Not Quite So Good News:
Benny was adopted and returned by his very sad owner. Although she loved him very much, she just didn’t have the time to work with Benny on his separation anxiety problem. He was so happy to have found a home that when she needed to leave, he became a “nervous Nellie”. He didn’t know what to do with himself and was worried that no one was coming back. In order to try to help Benny, he went through a course at First Friends and has an additional course that they said they would honor for his new family. Benny learned all kinds of commands while at school so we know he’s a smart boy. If you are a stay at home mom or you work from home, Benny might be the perfect pet for you. He just needs to learn to entertain himself and become confident that his owner will always return. We mentioned taking accordion lessons or trying his hand at jigsaw puzzles, but he wasn’t enthusiastic.

I will hug you and squeeze you and call you Pongo.

Pongo is a neutered, 8 year old Chow Chow who is just one big teddy bear. He’s a gentle soul with a great disposition who was in foster care receiving a heartworm treatment when they lost him. Yes, he got out and we didn’t hear from his foster family for days. So now, he sits in the shelter with one more treatment to complete wondering if he’ll find his forever home. We just know he will…because he is such a sweet dog and he deserves better. He deserves a family who will take care of him now and forever. And he really needs to finish his treatment in a quiet environment.

If you can help Pongo, please email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com.

Sparky needs your help. Please read his story.

We try our best to be entertaining when we write our pet profiles because the reality is that every story is a sad one, and a little levity helps us all cope. But there’s nothing funny about this story, and as a matter of fact, it will make you angry.

Sparky arrived as a stray with an abscessed eye that was so swollen that it appeared to be on the side of his head. He looked like something out of a horror movie. We took Sparky in for treatment where the abscess was drained, but his eye remained deformed. While in foster care, his eye became worse and painful…another trip to the vet and x-rays revealed a fracture to the side of his head. A fracture the vet believes was a result of blunt force trauma…the kind received with the blow from a bat or some other hard object.

You look at this little dog, a young, neutered Lhasa Opsa mix, and you can’t even begin to fathom how someone with a functioning heart could harm him, let alone bash his head in. We are now raising the money to pay for a CAT Scan which will be $600. This will tell us what further surgery he needs. We believe in him and even with the horrible treatment he has endured at the hands of his abuser, he is friendly. He is loving, and he will get his chance to live a good life. We’ve promised him that, and we keep our promises.

Peony “A peony by any other name couldn’t be as sweet!”

When I interviewed Peony, “sweet” was the first word that came to mind. She is a 5 year old Lab/Shepherd mix who arrived in early May as a stray. Peony is a natural blond and has a touch of white around her face. She has a wonderful personality, affectionate and loving.
She is very proud of her leash manners—she is a pro at going for a walk. Peony is a gentle soul with a lot of life to live. We’d love it if she could spend her golden years being loved and cuddled. One thing she mentioned to me in passing was that she is a bit sensitive about her tail; she can’t abide anyone pulling at it. Children older than 5 years would be the best fit for her. Other than that, Peony is a very flexible little girl. She is yearning for a new family. Don’t let this little flower wilt on the vine. Peony qualifies for the PAWS program (Partnering Animals with Seniors), so if you are over 55 you may adopt Peony for $45.

Brylee -- Her life has not been a fairy tale!

This little 2 year old Pit Bull mix has a sad story to tell, but we are hoping someone will provide a happy ending to her difficult journey. In early April 2008 Brylee was brought to the shelter along with her 8 unweaned puppies. She was a stray and was trying to care for her babies all by herself. Because we needed to keep the family together we found a wonderful foster home where the puppies could stay with their momma. All but one of her babies have found new homes, but Brylee is still in need of a family to call her own. According to the foster mother, Brylee is just the sweetest girl—very affectionate, gentle, and a real cuddler. She also loves to play and run, even becoming a good running partner for one of the family members. She gets along with children of all ages, other dogs and most everyone she meets. We don’t know what her life was like before we found her, but I’m sure it was difficult. Brylee will startle at loud noises or sudden movements. Could this be because she was mistreated in her past life? We’ll never know. What we do know is that Brylee was a great mother to her puppies and her foster family loved her very much. To watch her care so gently for her babies while allowing our staff to handle them and her speaks volumes to her disposition. Maybe you can turn Brylee’s pumpkin into a coach and give this little Cinderella a fairy tale ending.

You must be a 21 year old fairy godmother to adopt Brylee.

Sage--Have you seen Parsley, Rosemary or Thyme?

Who knew this little 9 month old brindle and white American Bulldog mix was a big Simon & Garfunkle fan? She maintains a happy outlook on life despite the fact that she was abandoned by her owner; though we don’t think she understands what that means. We are especially fond of her freckled, pink nose and adorable face. She has lots of puppy energy and can get pretty wound up by rough-housing. Sage doesn’t know her own strength so she would be best suited to a family with children over 10 years of age. She gets excited even thinking she’s going for a walk! Even though Sage is a sweet girl, her education is sadly lacking. She needs to learn her doggie manners, how to listen and mind her human. After puppy training, an experienced dog owner should be able to take this sweet girl anywhere, even Scarborough Fair!

You must be at least 21 to adopt Sage.

Brutus-- Et tu Humans?

If ever a dog deserved a better name it would be this boy.
This gorgeous 1 year old white shepherd mix arrived as a stray and was very unsure of us humans. It was clear that he hadn’t come from a good situation. Brutus is not a very large dog and he has the most beautiful face. Not surprisingly, he is very scared right now. Sometimes he just sits on his bed and shakes with fear or bewilderment. Brutus is gentle and friendly with people who are gentle and friendly with him. What he really needs is a patient owner who will give him all the time it takes to relax and trust again. If this weren’t sad enough, an examination revealed that he is heartworm positive and will require treatment to recover from this. We are hoping to find a sponsor to cover the costs. We would love to have someone to foster Brutus in their home while he undergoes treatment, fall in love with him and decide they belong together. Because Brutus is a “special needs” dog, he would be best suited to a mature, experienced dog owner. Though he has been betrayed by the “world” so far, all it takes is one loving human being to restore him to the happy, good dog he was meant to be.

If you’re interested in sponsoring Brutus’ heartworm treatment or fostering him, please email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com. The cost of a heartworm treatment is approximately $250.

Ethan--It’s a hard knock life!

Hey there. The name’s Ethan, I’m 4 years old and I’ve been on my own for some time now. The world can make a fellow nervous, what with cars to dodge, food to find and mean people to watch out for. You can see that I’m a pretty skinny canine--it’s hard to gain weight eating garbage. The people here say I am a shepherd mix--I don’t know, I guess they’re right. I know I’m not very big. This place is okay, but I gotta tell you, it’s noisy and a little scary. They give us good grub, but I just don’t feel like eating. They say I’m losing weight. There is a real nice lady who takes me out for walks, but I am still nervous when she leans over to pet me. I always think someone is gonna hit me. That’s the kind of life I’m used to.

I hear from the other guys in here that every so often a person will come and visit with a dog and before you know it, the human decides to take him home…forever! It sounds too good to be true, but I see dogs leave here every week. Boy I sure would like a nice soft bed in a home with somebody who really loves me. A house with young kids would likely be frightening for me since they make a lot of sudden moves and lots of noise. I like grown ups best…and I hope to find one who can restore my faith in the human kind.

Hague--Whew, is it naptime yet?

This photo has caught a rare moment when Hague is taking a breather. Usually this 6 month old Shepherd/Terrier mix is ready for action! He came to the shelter as a stray in April and is just itching to find himself a new home. Hague is friendly and exuberant and always ready to play. He would love to find a family who likes to run, take long walks and play lots of puppy games. Because he is so lively and full of energy, he would do better with children over the age of 5 years. He has begun losing weight and really needs someone to take him home and love him.

Of course, Hague would benefit from attending doggie kindergarten to learn how to mind his manners. People may wonder how he got his unusual name. Well, it’s where Animal Control found him wandering around all by himself. If you would like to give this little orphan a home (and possibly a new name) come and spend some time with Hague.

Walking with Memphis

Memphis is a 5 year old, neutered red and white English Coonhound.
Memphis is a big boy who loves long walks and he is pretty laid back. He is housetrained and has a great temperament. Memphis arrived at the shelter when his previous owner decided they didn’t want him anymore. That was it…they just didn’t want him anymore. Like an old pair of shoes, he was disposed of. Of course no one here can even imagine spending one day with this guy and not wanting to keep him forever.

Well Memphis wants to find a loving home where he is considered a permanent part of the family. He dreams of a big fenced-in back yard where he can run and stretch his long legs. He is good with people of all ages, but he is not a fan of cats. Memphis qualifies for our P.A.W.S. Program – Partnering Animals With Seniors. If you are age 55 or older, please contact the shelter to find out how you can adopt Memphis for a reduced fee.

If you can picture yourself walking with Memphis, please come see him. You won’t regret it!
Lacey—Our Best Under-bite Winner of the Year

Lacey is a spayed, 1 year old American Bulldog/Terrier mix who is very social and knows no strangers.
She enjoys being the center of attention and playing with her humans. She likes other dogs, cats and children….so she would make an excellent pet for any home.

Lacey is particularly proud of her recent award as “Dog with the best under-bite in a shelter located in Noblesville”. She takes the title seriously and flashes those bottom choppers every chance she gets. Lacey can sneak a quick kiss and never hide those pearly whites. Lacey has packed her sash and tiara and is ready to go home with a family who appreciates her inner and outer beauty…and of course, that award winning smile.

ARGUS—“Let’s go for a ride in the car. How about a ride in the car. Let’s go for a ride in the car!”

Doesn’t this beautiful boy’s smile knock your socks off? He could pose for an Armani ad if Armani designed dog clothes. Argus is a 1 year old Chocolate Lab/Doberman mix and is just as sweet as he is handsome. When he was just a pup he was brought to the shelter as a stray. We were so excited when he was adopted because we knew he deserved to have a happy life. Unfortunately, Argus was recently returned because the owners decided they didn’t have enough time for him.

Argus is a very good boy and is house trained, neutered and has a wonderful temperament. He misses being part of a family and doing fun things outside. His former owner said that he is great with older children (due to his size and energy level Argus might play a little too rough with toddlers.) If you have been looking for a dog to be a running partner, a frisbee catcher, or someone to ride shot gun with that adorable face looking out the car window, Argus is for you.

Bear—Hey Goldilocks, this baby Bear is j-u-s-t right!

Once upon a time there was a 1 year old red Chow Chow named Bear (even though he looked more like a lion!). He was quite the handsome boy as you can see in his portrait. Everyone loved the sparkle in his eye and the purple on his tongue. Now Bear’s family had kept him as an outside-only dog, so he was not used to living in a house, sleeping on an inside bed and playing on a carpeted floor. One day, Bear was brought to the shelter because he was “unwanted”. Bear didn’t understand why his family went away without him and he was sad. The people at the shelter figured out that Bear was a smart boy; he already knew how to “sit, shake, and lie down”. He’s also lacking some confidence, so he tends to be a little protective of his kennel…so we feel he is best suited in a home with adults only.

They knew that mastering the idea of living inside and using the toilet outside might be a bit confusing at first, but Bear would be up to the task. Before they left him, his family did say that Bear is good with children and with other dogs, so he would fit just right into most family groups. His gorgeous lion-like mane will take some grooming and that is why he is going to need an experienced dog owner. The shelter hopes that this Mother Goose story will have a happy ending and that the right person will look at his smiling face and gentle eyes and decide this baby Bear can sleep in their bed! You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Oryan—“Age is only a state of mind!”

I hate to brag, but I’ve been told that I don’t look a day over 4. However, I have to confess that I am really 8 years old. I am a black Lab/Chow mix and you can see I have a lovely purplish tongue. I have lived with my family all of my 8 years until they decided to move and give me to the shelter. I guess that means that I loved them more than they did me. I just can’t figure it out.

I am an easy-going gal, housetrained, and friendly with just about everyone. The one sticky wicket might be kids under the age of 10. They tend to be a little too noisy and active for me to relax around. I am just fine with older kids and adults. I really miss having a family to love—I need to feel wanted. The humans here at the shelter say that I am a “very good girl” and that “someone this sweet deserves to be adopted”. I am not the puppy I once was, so I don’t need as much vigorous activity, just a nice walk will do me fine. Attention Baby Boomers: I qualify for the PAWS program, so if you are 55 or older you can take me home with you for $45.

Simone—Attention Big-Dog Lovers, here’s an XL Sweetie-pie!

Believe it or not, this beautiful fawn Mastiff mix is only 1 year old. She does not know that she is a big girl; she’d love to curl up in your lap and cuddle. Her owners very sadly surrendered her to the shelter as they were moving out of the country and couldn’t take her with them. They said that she was a good girl, house trained, spayed, and knew the commands “sit, shake, & down”. If you look at her wise and gentle face you can see that she misses being part of a family and hopes that she can find a new one as soon as possible. Because Simone is a “generously proportioned gal” and may not know her own strength, she would be best suited to kids who are 12 and up. It’s not because she’s got a mean bone in her body, but because she might knock a small child over in her enthusiasm. If your taste runs to the larger breed dogs, Simone should be “delicious”!

Frankie—“Running out of Time”

Frankie is a 2 year old Shepherd/Terrier mix who is in desperate need of a home. His outlook is always hopeful, but his body doesn’t agree. Frankie is dropping weight rapidly and we are worried about his ability to thrive in the kennel. We hope the love in his face will capture your heart and bring you in to meet him.

Frankie is a very friendly and outgoing boy who loves hanging out with his human friends. He also likes to play games and he thinks squeaky toys are the next best thing to bacon treats! Frankie is a very intelligent guy who knows the commands “sit”, “down” and “shake”. He is very gentle when taking treats, but he can be a little protective of his food bowl at times so he is best suited in a home with children mature enough to respect his food bowl.

Your love can save his life.

Daisy—A Black Beauty

Daisy is a 1 year old Lab mix who projects innocence and hope in her big brown eyes. She is gentle and loving, has an excellent temperament, and would be great with kids. My goodness what more could you ask for! Intelligence? Well, okay….Daisy is a smart cookie too. She knows her sit command and has all kinds of potential to learn more. Daisy is the poster child for a great family pet.

Pete the picky pooch who prefers people in the prime of their life!

Try saying that fast! I just was not cut out for a life with rug-rats, uh, I mean, children. I am quite entertaining enough all by myself without small human beings getting in the way. I was with a family since I was a pup, but when the children started arriving…let’s just say that the owners chose to keep the kids and brought me to the shelter. I don’t blame them. Look, I am 1.5 years old with a long life in front of me. I want to find an owner who enjoys the same things I do; playing with me, going for walks with me, shopping for doggie toys for me, cuddling on the couch with me, and other wonderful things like that. No kids, just you and me and fun, fun, fun!!
Now you can see for yourself that I am a nice looking guy, a black and white Cocker Spaniel with loads of personality, great leash manners, neutered, house trained and ready for a fresh start in life. The folks around here say that I am gentle and will make some one a very good pet. I really am a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. So how about it? Ready to head to the store for some toys?

Roxy—“What do you mean ‘smile’? I AM smiling!

You can’t tell from my picture, but I am really splitting my sides laughing! I am a Redbone Coonhound and my face just always looks like I lost my best friend. The funny thing is, in a way, I have. I was brought to this shelter in May by my family. They didn’t want me anymore even though I have lived with them all my life. It’s kind of hard when you are 5 years old to be in a strange place with so many new noises and smells. At least the humans here are nice. They say I have very soulful eyes, a silky soft coat and that I am very intelligent. I don’t want to brag, but I am house trained and know several commands. I’ve been spayed, whatever that means. Keep in mind that I’m no little purse sized froufrou dog; I’m a big girl, or as I like to say, big-boned. But I love to be hugged and loved. Because I am so big, I would be best suited to a family with older kids, at least 10 years old. I also qualify for the PAWS program.

Pippin—“ I bet you can’t do this with your tongue!”

And that’s not all this very smart little 3 year old can do. His resume lists among his many skills: sit, speak, down, beg, roll over, play dead, and shake. He is full of energy and ready for action pretty much all of the time. He has been house trained and neutered. His owners surrendered him because they had a new baby and didn’t want him anymore. He’d lived with them for two years so coming to the shelter was a bit of a shock for this boy. Like any self-respecting Beagle, Pippin can become a little vocal when he’s lecturing or telling an amusing story. He might be a bit too loud for an apartment, unless the neighbors also have talkative Beagles.

Because Pippin is a real go-getter, he is probably a little much for children under the age of 5 to handle. But if you have some energetic grade schoolers, they might be perfect for one another. They’ll wear each other out!
