Dino—“His smile is fading.”

Dino is a 6 year old, neutered Pit Bull Terrier with a smile that goes from ear to ear. He was surrendered along with his sister when his owner moved where he couldn’t have “pit bulls.” His sister has found her forever home, but Dino has been waiting for 11 long months for his. Dino is housetrained and knows all his basic commands including “sit”, “down”, and “shake.” He’s best suited in a home with teens/adults and should be the only pet in the home. And if you are 55 years or older, Dino’s adoption fee is only $45!

Dino’s smile is starting to fade. Please consider adding him to your home today. Email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com for more information or you can visit him at Dog Dayz located at 15310 Herriman Blvd in Noblesville just north of 146th Street and SR 37. To visit with Dino, call 773-4500.

Daisy is a spayed, 7yr old Shepherd/Rottweiler mix who is housetrained. She was left at a boarding facility because the owners had a baby. Apparently, they couldn’t handle their dog of 7 years and a newborn, so Daisy is now living at Hickory Acres Boarding Kennels in Sheridan hoping that a family with multi-tasking abilities will give her a FOREVER home.

Daisy needs to be the only pet in the home and would be best suited with a family who has older children who can handle her size and strength.

For more information about Daisy, please contact Pete Huser at 317-769-4296.
Todd: “Single, non-smoking Pitbull seeks Human to love.”

Todd is a neutered, 2 year old Lab/American Pit Bull Terrier mix who is very outgoing and has no fear of commitment. He loves life and he loves to learn.

Todd is very intelligent and has already learned the commands "sit", "down" and "shake"….and that’s just the beginning. You and Todd will be doing crossword puzzles before it’s over if you give him enough time and training!

Todd is very energetic and needs to find someone who will ensure he gets plenty of exercise. He is extremely affectionate and very strong. For this reason, he is better suited in a home with older children, preferably ages 16 and up, who can handle is size and strength. Please come in and meet this handsome boy.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Todd is now staying with our friends at Dog Dayz located at 15310 Herriman Blvd in Noblesville just north of 146th Street and SR 37. To visit with Todd, call 773-4500.

“Sweet as sugar!”

Yes she is….Sugar is a 3 year old Pit Bull Terrier who arrived at our shelter as a stray in early August. Sugar is absolutely adorable and loves people of all ages. She likes to give kisses and snuggle…and of course she has the best spotted, bright pink bunny ears ever!

Unfortunately, Sugar does have Heartworm Disease. She needs to receive treatment for this to save her life. The cost will be approximately $250 and we need to find a sponsor for her treatment. In addition to a sponsor, Sugar will need a foster (and hopefully permanent) home where she can recover.

THIS JUST IN! My heartworms have been treated and I've been given a clean bill of health! Now, I'm ready to find my forever home where I can play fetch and complete the lives of a wonderful family.

Elvira—“Don’t count me out.”

Elvira is a 10 year old Chow mix who is very gentle even though life has been anything but. She is partially blind, but that doesn’t stop her from going on walks to explore and navigate the Great Outdoors. She is hearing impaired, but that doesn’t prevent her from knowing if her humans are asking her to come to them. She has tooth decay and needs some dental work, but that doesn’t prevent her from enjoying a good meal and the occasional chewy treat. And if all of that weren’t enough, she also had Heartworm disease --a curable condition-- yet if left untreated she will not survive. Despite it all, she will still share a smile and wag her tail. Her strength and spirit are nothing short of amazing.
Elvira is hoping to find a special person who is willing to give her a chance…a chance to know the compassion of someone who will provide her with the basics in life and necessary veterinary care…a chance to share her gentle spirit and affection…a chance to experience the comfort of a loving home while in her latter years…all she wants is a chance.

Elvira will need a financial sponsor so she can begin her treatment to cure her Heartworm disease which will be approximately $300. She will also need a foster home where she can rest comfortably while she is recuperating. If her foster home could become her forever home, she would be the happiest girl in the world! And if you’re 55 years or older, Elvira’s adoption fee is just $45. If you are interested in sponsoring, fostering or even adopting Elvira, please email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com or you can make a secure donation here.

PENNY—See a penny, pick it up, all the day you’ll have good luck!

I am 3 years old and I am a yellow Lab-mix;
some think I have some Alaskan Malamute or German Shepherd in my family tree. Please don’t tease me about my ears; I am not part rabbit! I lived with my family all my life and I know they loved me; they had me spayed so that counts for a lot. They said times were hard and they couldn’t afford me anymore so on September 17, 2008 they surrendered me to this shelter. I have a torn ACL, but the pain is being managed by with daily medication that is very affordable so I don’t necessarily need surgery. If I can find a home where they’ll help with the cost of my ACL surgery, the Humane Society has offered to help too. They think I’m worth every penny (Get it! Every PENNY!)

I’m a big girl, 84 pounds, and I like to play and run around. I would love to live someplace with a big fenced-in yard or on a farm. I like to stretch my legs you know. I think that my ideal home would have adult & teenage humans and only low-key, polite dogs. Little kids, boisterous dogs & cats just make me want to pull my hair out—too noisy, irritating and grabby for my taste. I do crave affection and I am a very sweet girl, looking for lots of love and ear scratches. I know how to give high fives with both paws, sit, down, stay AND roll over for an immediate belly rub. I’m also housetrained!

I imagine myself on a run with my new owner, the wind blowing in my ears, my tongue hanging out catching the occasional bug….pure heaven I say! If you adopt me I promise I’ll be your lucky penny.

Ask Jeeves…why he is in a shelter at the ripe old age of 11.

So why are you in a shelter Jeeves?
The answer, he arrived as a stray but without a doubt had a home where they must have loved him. He is neutered and knows all of his basic commands including “sit”, “shake”, and “down.” Unfortunately, he came to us without any identification, no tags or microchip, so we waited and hoped a family would come looking. They did not.

So here Jeeves sits at approximately 11 years of age, a beautiful chocolate Labrador Retriever mix with a nose that would put an aardvark to shame, waiting for a new home. He can hardly contain his excitement as visitors pass by in hopes it’s his kennel they might stop at. “Maybe this time they’ll be coming for me,” he says. “Maybe this time, my family will walk through the door looking for me.”

We hope for Jeeves that a family, the one that will give him a forever home and keep him safe, will stop at his kennel very soon.

Jeeves qualifies for our P.A.W.S. Program - Partnering Animals With Seniors. If you are age 55 or older, please contact the shelter to find out how you can adopt Jeeves for just $45.

Paddington—“Pip, pip, cheerio and how about a spot of tea?

Ever since he was given the name Paddington, this 4 year old Retriever mix has been barking with a British accent.
We haven’t the heart to tell him he’s a Hoosier. He arrived as a stray on October 1st and it’s apparent that he’s been on his own for a while. We made sure that there would be no little Paddingtons running around, if you catch my drift. He’s a big boy-74 lbs-and is very friendly, social and just a bit too full of himself. That happens when a youngster is never given any guidelines or rules to follow. So this means that Paddington has the potential to be a fabulous companion as long as he understands that he is not the boss. Firm, TLC should do the trick. You can always bribe him with Masterpiece Theatre and a crumpet or two.

I am staying with our friends at Dog Dayz located at 15310 Herriman Blvd in Noblesville just north of 146th Street and SR 37. To visit with me, call 773-4500.

Fozzie's Tale WILL

End Happily Ever After

Meet Fozzie. This 5 year old Chow mix has had some life. His story with us begins over 3 years ago when he first arrived as a stray. Returned to his owner then and many times to follow, animal control eventually seized him and he was surrendered to us.

Fozzie was very sick when he became our responsibility. He suffers from epilepsy which is controlled with daily medication. Unfortunately, the stress of living in a shelter still drives Fozzie to have seizures on occasion and further exasperates his compulsive circling behavior. He is a very unique dog. He's not one to bond quickly or jump in your lap, but with time, he makes a connection often noted with a gentle kiss to your hand.

Sadly, we have not been able to find the right home for Fozzie. We have tried diligently to place him for the many months he has patiently waited. With the frequency of his seizures beginning to increase, we knew we had to do something immediately, so we contacted a beautiful sanctuary in Minnesota called Home for Life in hopes they would accept him into their program. He was accepted! Now, we need to raise the money to get Fozzie there and make the donation needed to help cover his future care.

UPDATE: Thanks to your generous donations, we have raised the money needed to get Fozzie to his new home in Minnesota. His personal “town house” is currently under construction at Home for Life, and when it is completed, Fozzie will finally be on his way to a forever home.

Bristow—“Hey, could I get a little more manly stuffed toy over here?”

Honestly, you’d think I was a little poodle by the looks of this pink dog. I’m a 6 year old, full grown, 87 lb. Shepherd/Alaskan Malamute mix. And just because I am what they call a Senior animal, don’t you worry; there’s plenty of get-up-and-go in this canine! I just love to play; it keeps you young. This is not to say that I don’t enjoy kickin’ back and watching the game with you on the couch. I guess you could say that I’m a friendly guy looking for a friendly human to spend time with and enjoy the upcoming holidays. I sure love turkey and dressing. I arrived here as a stray back in October. In my previous life I was neutered, so somebody took care of me at some point. I am embarrassed to say that during my temperament testing I tended to guard my food bowl a bit. But when you’ve been on the road and food is scarce, it tends to make a guy a bit testy. Check out the fine print below—they’ll make you a deal on my adoption fee if you’re 55!

I am currently staying with our friends at Invisible Fence located at 15150 Herriman Blvd., Suite A, Noblesville, IN. You are welcome to come by and see me. Call (317) 776-3647 for visiting hours.

Daisy & Donald—A Loyal Brother & Sister

Just before Valentine’s Day, our Animal Control Officer brought Daisy and her brother Donald in to the shelter as strays. This dog lover sees mostly English Setter and Border Collie in them. It’s hard to say what these sibs have been through in their 3 years of life, but Donald came in with some injuries that needed medical attention.

Daisy and Donald have really struggled adjusting to the kennel life, but as long as they have stuck together, they seem to make it through. If you visited right now, you’d find Donald hiding behind his sister tucked quietly behind the bed they share. Daisy will be keeping Donald safe and warm. And as you approach their kennel, Daisy will be the one to walk over and sit down for you to pet her through the door…offering you a paw as if to say “how do you do…I’m Daisy, and that’s my brother Donald. And we hope you’ll find it in your heart to take us home, and love us…now and forever.”

The ideal home is one that can take both Daisy and Donald but it is not required. They will need to be the only pets in the home and they need a seasoned owner who understands that these two dogs are diamonds in the rough and need a lot of patience and love.

: “Quick, who does he remind you of? That’s right…Petey from the Little Rascals!”

Sedric is a 5 years old Pit Bull terrier-mix who was surrendered to the shelter in October along with his companion Pauly.
The owner said she could no longer keep the dogs. Sedric is mostly white with the exception of his brindled left eye and ear. He has not gotten into somebody’s lipstick; his lips are just naturally pink! (They match his ears) When visiting with Sedric the first thing I noticed was how very thin he is; you can see every rib. This boy needs to go to Golden Corral and go back for thirds. Like Pauly, Sedric has lived with his owner since he was a little pup. He is naturally confused about being here, but he is willing to socialize with everyone he meets. It may take him a while to really warm up, but he loves attention and enjoys playing. He might play a little rough for small children, and we think he would do best being the only pet in the family. During his temperament testing, Sedric scored very well in his social skills and ability to follow directions. He has been neutered so he is ready to go home with his new family today. Sedric qualifies for the PAWS Program. If you’re 55 years or older, his fee is just $45! You must be 21 to adopt Sedric.

Trooper: “Why does life have to be so hard?”

Look at this sad boy’s face. He is wondering who he can trust and why he’s here in this noisy place with so many barking dogs and strange smells. He is so stressed and fearful that he cannot relax. He looks at visitors with suspicion; are they nice? will they hurt me? why do I have to stay in this kennel? Trooper is a 4 year old black Lab mix who has been neutered. He used to be someone’s pet at one time. He was picked up in Carmel on October 19, since he was running loose on the streets. When he first arrived, Trooper tested out as a level 3 dog. This is easy to understand since he was so frightened. Later testing revealed him to be at level 2. We feel that with an experienced dog owner, in a quiet home environment Trooper will gradually relax and settle down. He will need a patient and understanding owner who can give him firm & loving support. Currently Trooper will guard his food bowl; he probably does not trust that there will be more food in it the next day. If you can find a place in your heart to give this sad boy another chance to be happy, we would all be so very grateful.

Cyrus

I’ll be the first to admit that I am one confused dog. Life hasn’t been easy for me in my 4 years on earth. I was picked up and brought to this shelter in March and things have been so hard to figure out. It’s noisy in the kennel, people come and go, but I never get to leave with them. Between you & me, this place is really scary to me. I know that the people here are doing the best they can to make me feel safe, but I just wish I could go home with someone where it’s quiet and peaceful and I could finally relax. Little kids are so bouncy and loud and I just can’t handle all their energy. I’d love to find a human who would let me be their only pet and could take their time with me. I really am a very nice guy; I just don’t like to be rushed. Easy does it is my motto! I think that’s cause I’m part Chocolate Lab. Some folks think my other half is Weimaraner but I don’t really know. I am neutered….and I do like this picture the lady took of me; I think it shows my true personality. Doesn’t my coat look shiny? And how about those pearly whites? You know, I just need a little luck to find that nice human who can see that I am a good boy who just needs some patience and love.

I am currently staying with our friends at Invisible Fence located at 15150 Herriman Blvd., Suite A, Noblesville, IN. You are welcome to come by and see me. Call (317) 776-3647 for visiting hours.

Jojo: “Don’t let my size and big head scare you. I’m sugar through and through!”

This 1 year old Mastiff/American Staffordshire terrier mix is just a ball of puppy energy and happiness. He does not know his own strength! He thinks he’s a frou-frou lap dog. Jojo was surrendered to the shelter by his owner because he was unwanted. I hate seeing that word associated with any pet. Jojo was always kept outside, so he is still getting used to being in an indoor location. To sum up Jojo’s personality you would have to use the words gentle, friendly, out-going with everyone he meets, fun loving and as well mannered as he can be without having gone to puppy school. When visiting with Jojo, he was one big wiggly muscle. He happily gave me kisses and tried to sit on my lap. A head’s up: Jojo would overwhelm any child much smaller than him! He’s a lover not a fighter, but as I said, he doesn’t realize that he’s not a Lhasa Apso.

JoJo is Heartworm Positive and needs a financial sponsor and foster home where he can receive the treatment to save his life. If you're interested in sponsoring JoJo's treatment (approximately $300) or fostering JoJo, please email animalprograms@hamiltonhumane.com.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt Jojo.

Toby: “Did I hear somebody say ‘walk time’?”

This 4 year old Rottweiler/Shepherd mix arrived on November 16 when a nice lady found him and brought him to us. No one came to claim him and he’s been waiting and waiting for someone to adopt him.
This guy is a big boy weighing in at 83 pounds! He has a lot of energy and plenty of spirit. Toby is not fond of children; they make him nervous. Like any Rottie/Shepherd, Toby has a mind of his own and he does not always like to be a follower. He prefers to think of himself as the leader. So, the best home for Toby will be one that can provide him with firm but loving training & consistent rules of behavior. When I visited with Toby, he was wagging his tail the whole time, but he barked at me to let me know he wasn’t quite sure about me. Toby is a good boy; he’s just a bit stressed out by the kennel environment and being behind “bars”. He’d love to hang out with one or two people he trusts and loves. I see a comfy couch in his future!

I am staying with our friends at First Friend K-9 Training located at 12401 Reynolds Drive in Fishers. To visit with me, please call 317-842-4199 for an appointment.

Deeno—“Voted ‘BEST NOSE’ February 2009.”

Deeno is a 9 year old, neutered yellow lab who came to us after spending the last 3 years of his life waiting for a home with a local rescue group. When they could no longer keep him, we knew we needed to give Deeno the chance he has waited so long for…the chance to finally find a forever home.

Deeno is full of life. He doesn’t let the arthritis in his hips get him down. In fact, now that we’re giving him medicine to manage his pain, he can hardly contain the wag in his tail. We all get older…and we will all need a little extra TLC some day. Deeno still loves to go on walks and gives wet (not sloppy) kisses. His big brown, freckle-speckled nose is the focus of his wise, graying face. His brown eyes glimmer with endless hope that a home awaits him with a big fluffy bed to rest on at the foot of his master’s bed.

Deeno is good with other dogs but does not like cats. And because Deeno does have sensitive hips, we recommend he go to a family with older children who won’t be too rough with him. Deeno qualifies for our P.A.W.S Program—Partnering Animals With Seniors—so his adoption fee is only $45 if you are at least 55 years old.

Brody—“If you’re handsome and ya know it raise an ear. If you’re handsome and ya know it raise an ear….”

Well, this 4 year old brindle and white American Staffordshire Terrier is certainly handsome and has one raised ear at all times to make sure you know it!

Brody is an active and playful boy who is also extremely intelligent. He knows the commands "sit", "down", "stay" and "shake". He almost always meets me at his kennel in the play bow position ready to get his romp on! Brody is a good boy who loves people, but he can get a bit carried away sometimes when he's playing so he would be best suited in a home with teenage children. Continuing his training is critical in keeping him focused and to make sure he understands he's not in charge. Brody is very gentle when taking treats and would do well in a home with an experienced owner.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Bruno—“Does my head look like an ash tray to you?”

No Bruno, it doesn’t. But unfortunately, the two circular scars on his head resemble cigarette burns as we have ruled out any type of medical reason. Because my blood pressure will rise to dangerous levels, I’m not going to think about what may have happened to Bruno’s head, but instead I’ll focus on what an amazing dog he is. Bruno has an EXCELLENT temperament, friendly as can be and has never met a stranger. He is 2 years old, neutered and housetrained.

He gets so excited at the prospect of someone visiting him that he will press the side of his body against the kennel door so you can easily access his side for a quick scratch. Those big bat ears look like they reach a mile from the top of his big noggin, and those brown eyes speak volumes.

Bruno is ready for a new start, for a new life filled with love and mutual respect.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

Brandy—Gorgeous, intelligent and housetrained….what more could you want in a woman?

I know what you’re thinking. Boy does this dog look goofy in her picture. You’re right, I do. The funny thing is my goofy personality matches it perfectly. I’m not afraid to say it but you need to know something else about me…I’m an absolutely wonderful dog.

I’m a 2 year old spayed female with Rottweiler markings in the body of a who knows what. I have some very funny looking ears, an incredibly slender body, and a full tail. I absolutely love to play with dogs of all shapes and sizes! I’m currently in a foster home with three adult Rottweilers, and a Pit Bull puppy. I’ve even made friends with several other dogs that have come over to visit. When I’m not playing, I spend all my time cuddled up with my foster parents. They say I love to hog the bed at night, what’s wrong with that???

I’m a very smart dog and I would love to go to a home where my owner will help me progress in my training. I already know “sit” and “down” and I’m housetrained. Getting better at obedience should be a piece of cake because I LOVE food and treats. Did somebody mention cake? Because I’m still playful and my weighing about 60 pounds, I’m probably best suited in a home with older children who can handle my energy level.

If you are looking for a great dog, I’m your girl. Because of my breed(s), you must be at least 21 years old to adopt me. For more information, contact my foster dad at (317)695-7047 or joer@forumcu.com.

Valentino—A little clueless, but adorable!

I really like this picture of me because it shows off my pearly whites, sparkly eyes and jaunty ears. Pretty cute, huh?
I am about 7 or 8 months old & I am excited about being a puppy. There is so much to learn and so many things to chew on! I am a tri-color Beagle mix and I think this means that I am very friendly. I was having a great old time running around smelling stuff when I got picked up and brought here to this place. I heard them say that this was on January 23rd and I was wearing a blue leash and was neutered, but I don’t know what that means. I waited for my family to come pick me up, but no one ever came. So now I live here I guess. I just wish I could go outside and run around again. It’s okay in this place; I have lots of other dogs to talk to but I’d rather be in a house with a yard and bunches of doggie toys. Did I mention that I love to chew? For some reason I feel like I have all this energy and no place to use it up. I really like everybody. I LOVE going out for walks, but they never last long enough. The people here say that I could use some “puppy school” so that I would learn my manners. But I don’t know what that means either. I just like to jump and play and romp and chew and get excited and pretend bite and roll around…..and then fall asleep. You know, be a puppy!!! If you like puppies, how about me? I’m available!

I am staying with our friends at Dog Dayz located at 15310 Herriman Blvd in Noblesville just north of 146th Street and SR 37. To visit with me, call 773-4500.
SHIRO: “Fourth son” in Japanese

Shiro does not want you to feel sorry for him. He is 11 years old and has lived with the same family all his life. When they decided to move, they also decided that they didn’t want Shiro anymore. So even though this handsome Shiba Inu mix is completely devastated at being abandoned, his Japanese heritage requires him to maintain his dignity. Of course he is house trained and has been neutered. Despite his attempts to stay strong, we know that inside, Shiro is scared and very insecure. Imagine being 77 years old and suddenly being dropped off at a nursing home. This hand-some boy deserves to have a loving and patient owner who will never abandon him again. It may take a while to earn Shiro’s trust, but once he feels comfortable and safe, he will be most grateful for your kindness. He would benefit from an experienced dog owner who can deal with his fear. The Shiba Inu breed is known for its loyalty and affection toward its owner, although they can be reserved with strangers. Let’s hope that the next person in Shiro’s life will give him a better reason to be loyal and loving. Shiro qualifies for the PAWS program. Shiro needs a home with adults only.
Meeko: “Dog Whisperer? Who’s the Dog Whisperer?”

Meeko doesn’t know the meaning of the word meek.
This handsome 1 ½ year old American Bulldog mix with the cute pink ears and lips is basically a very good boy; he is just currently under the mistaken impression that he is the leader of the pack. But to be fair if a dog has gone from one home to another and never received obedience training, it’s hard to expect anything else of him. He had been adopted from another shelter as a pup, but after living with his original owner for 8 months, he was surrendered to our shelter. The reason given was “they were moving”. Before leaving him, his owner did say that he was good with kids. So Meeko came to stay with us. Pretty soon he found another new home. We were so happy for this friendly guy. However, he was returned to the shelter after only one day. Reportedly, Meeko did not demonstrate the best behavior and tried to assert his dominance. Keep in mind that this boy has been given virtually no training and has no idea about doggie manners, keeping his opinion to himself or being a member of the pack. During his initial temperament testing, Meeko passed with flying colors, being friendly, taking treats gently and showing no guarding of his food bowl. Therefore we think that Meeko can read human beings pretty well. If he thinks that a person is a pushover or the least bit intimidated by his size & personality, then he becomes “large and in charge”! What this boy needs is an experienced dog owner who has no reservations about putting Meeko into his proper place. Can you say “Cesar Millan”? Once he knows who is boss, we feel sure that he will revert to his true sweet personality. Because he is energetic and strong Meeko should go to a home with adults only. This guy deserves a second chance to show his true colors. You must be 21 to adopt Meeko.

I am currently staying with our friends at Invisible Fence located at 15150 Herriman Blvd., Suite A, Noblesville, IN. You are welcome to come by and see me. Call (317) 776-3647 for visiting hours.
This is a lady in distress, in need of a knight in shining armor!

Lady has known little happiness in her life. She was reportedly born in an animal shelter 8 years ago. She is a Cocker Spaniel mix and a rather petite 35 pounds. Her coat looks either black or brown, depending upon the light. She was found lost & alone in Carmel and a kind gentleman brought her to us. We know that Lady was someone’s pet at one time because she is spayed. Given the fact that Lady is a senior dog and we don’t know how long she has been wandering the streets, it is not surprising that she is confused, nervous about her surroundings, and slow to trust new people. However, during her temperament testing she was friendly, social and ready to play. Lady does have some sensitivity issues with her ears and feet until she gets to know you. We feel that Lady is a bit of a “Nervous Nelly”. Perhaps she was tormented or restrained in the past and this is her only way to protect herself. Her new owner will need to be patient and gentle with Lady to help her relax and learn to trust. Lady would be more comfortable with older children who would respect her space or perhaps with empty nesters who would give her the unconditional love she needs. I picture her curled up in a lap or tucked into a chair with her new owner. If you would like to come to the aid of this damsel in distress and you are 55 or older, you can adopt Lady for a reduced fee.
King would love to come live in your castle!

This handsome boy used to live in another shelter that had to close its doors.
He was a staff favorite and they knew he would have a better chance at adoption if he came to stay with us. King is 1 ½ years old and is a Terrier/Pit Bull mix. He has a mostly white body with very cute chocolate brown markings on his face, ears and rear end! His foster family reports that King is a credit to his breed! He gets along really well with other dogs and does not respond to growling or nipping by other dogs. He just turns the other cheek! He really should have a fenced in yard because he LOVES to play outside with his doggie friends. He is extremely friendly with people and adapts easily to unfamiliar situations. King would make an excellent family dog and will no doubt be a loyal and loving companion. If you think your kingdom could use a new king, then please contact our shelter to arrange an audience with the King. You must be 21 to adopt him.
Single, young female, redhead with a bit of platinum, slender, athletic, determined self-starter, loves movies, spelunking, Moroccan food, & 80’s music: seeking soul-mate for permanent relationship.

Glory: “Did you know my name means great beauty & splendor?”

Well, so far the only thing that is splendid about my life is my name, although they tell me here that I’m beautiful! I had been roaming along the Hamilton County border trying to find something to eat, when I was picked up and brought to this shelter on January 22. I guess the person could see that I’d been having a rough time, since I had some cuts and scrapes. What a relief! It was nice and warm here and I had a big meal right away. I must admit that I was a little “freaked out” by all the noise, strange dogs and different smells, but everyone made me feel welcome. I was getting used to things here when I was adopted in February.

Unfortunately, the animals at the new home and I didn’t get off to a good start and 8 days later….back to the shelter I went. I don’t think people know that it takes a good month or more for an adopted animal to settle in to a new home, let alone establish lasting friendships with the new canine/feline siblings! If a human adopted a child, I would hope that they’d let the boy or girl have some leeway before returning them to the adoption agency. Just a thought—no offense intended. I am a 3 year old red & white red nosed Pit Bull terrier and I was spayed when I got adopted. Did you know you have to take tests here? I had to go with a nice lady and take some “temperament tests”. I don’t mean to brag, but I was given very good marks! They said I was friendly, sociable and easy going. The only comment the teacher made was that I would like to be the “alpha dog”. Hey, I’m a leader, not a follower. I would like to be the animal in charge of the other animals or maybe even an only dog! Wouldn’t it be lovely to get all the attention & all the treats? A girl can dream, can’t she?! If you like girls with self confidence and red hair, I wish you’d come and visit me at the shelter! It would be splendid! You must be 21 years old to adopt me.

Sophina: “When my pizza arrives, would you mind paying the delivery guy?”

On February 15, I was nosing around the Noblesville Wal-Mart parking lot checking old food wrappers for a tasty morsel, when I was picked up by a nice man and brought to this hotel for hungry animals.
I got my own little space with a blanket to curl up on and a big bowl of real food! Just for me! And everyone was very kind to me. I am used to being shooed away or even yelled at whenever I approach a human being. But boy, it’s different here. Granted it can get kind of noisy when all the dogs start talking at once, but I feel like I died and went to heaven since arriving here. I found out that I am a black & white pit bull terrier mix and that I am about 1 ½ years old. I never knew what I was! I had to take some tests and it turns out that I am a very nice girl (I could have told them that!). I know how to “sit” & “shake” which seems to go over big with the human beings. The people here do seem to be sad that I am so skinny. They say they can see every “bone in my body”. Listen, if I had a nice juicy bone you can be sure that I’ll put it in my body!! They tell me that this is just a temporary home and that someday a very kind person will come and take me to my new forever home.

I am very gentle and well behaved. I love car rides and I like to curl up in the seat in the sun and nap. I would be good with kids (suggested ages 5 and up) and love to give kisses. I am a lap dog, but I’m so petite it shouldn’t be a problem to let me rest my head on your shoulder. Man, would I love to be in someone’s lap right now, snuggled up safely…eating a pizza.
You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.
Baby: “Are you my mama?”

Baby is a black & white Pit Bull terrier who is absolutely terrified by the shelter environment.
She was surrendered to the shelter back in October along with her sister Beauty. Her owner said that a family illness made it impossible to keep her. Because she had lived with them all 4 years of her life, she is confused and fearful. You can see by her photo that Baby is very thin; some dogs just can’t keep weight on when they are so stressed. During our visit, this sweet little girl gazed at me with a worried, wrinkled brow. Her tail was tucked so far under her belly that I couldn’t see it at first. She is not very big; she will always be a medium sized girl. She is spayed and nearly house trained. This is because Baby was mostly an outside dog. Before coming to us, she had never known the luxury of living in a house, but she so desperately wants to. She longs to be inside and a part of someone’s family. It is recommended that her new family have a 6 ft. privacy fence because Baby knows how to climb a chain link fence!

Sadly, Baby came to us with heartworm disease. The GOOD news is, she has completed her treatment and has received a clean bill of health. Her foster mom did an excellent job housetraining Baby and socializing her with her other dog, a male pit bull. Baby loves to play and really came out of her shell.

She is now back at the shelter and our hope is she will find a home quickly before she goes back to the fearful girl who retreats to the back of her kennel for safety. Please come visit with this Baby today. You must be at least 21 years old to adopt Baby.

Catarina: Could you have my car brought around? I’m off to the Nordstrom sale!

I’m wearing my fur stole, but I can’t find my good handbag. You know a lady likes to be well put together when she goes shopping. I am a bit old fashioned, I know; but I am 7 years old after all. I checked into this hotel when a kind stranger noticed I was lost and seeking assistance. I was feeling poorly when I arrived here and it was discovered that I had a HUGE bladder stone! Surgery did the trick, though I will need to maintain my diet of CD to prevent further occurrences of stones.

My pedigree includes both German Shepherd on my father’s side and Chow Chow on my mother’s. (I haven’t spoken to my siblings in years; we had a falling out regarding the will.) In my social circles I’m known to be a very friendly and gracious lady, well versed in dog etiquette, crate training & doting upon my human. I admit that I’m not fond of crowds, noisy places, children, rowdy pets, or stressful situations. A home with another “senior” dog and only one or two humans would be just lovely. I would love to enjoy my golden years in a low key “take a nap in the afternoon” type of household. I don’t shop online, so don’t worry about that. I just like the customer service at Nordstrom. If you are 55 or older we can make arrangements for a significant discount on my adoption fee.

Jethro: “Hey ya’ll, nice weather we’re havin’. Ya need a good dog?”

If so, I’d like to apply for the job. Here’s my story. I’m roughly 8 years old & I’m a tri-color Foxhound or maybe a Treeing Walker Coonhound. I don’t rightly know. I’ve been on my own for quite some time now. The Animal Control Officer picked me up on March 9, at an abandoned property where I had been bunking. I was in pretty bad shape, with cuts and scrapes and a double eye infection that hurt like crazy. The good people here fixed me up and I’m feelin’ much better now. Trouble is their doctorin’ showed that I have a disease called Heartworm. Probably cause I was never given the medicine that keeps me from catchin’ them. Like I said, I don’t remember the last time I had an owner who took care of me. (Nobody ever neutered me either, so there are probably lots of little Jethros out there in the world. Hope someone is takin’ care of them…. )

Anyway, the darnedest thing, since comin’ here I discovered this delicious food called peanut butter. Can’t get enough of the stuff! Also, they took me into this room and put me through all kinds of tests to see how I behaved. I could’ve told them that I would do just great. I’m friendly, easy goin’, and a gentleman when it comes to my food bowl. I’m not interested in toys, but I’m no pup, still wet behind the ears. I’d be most obliged if you’d consider adding me to your family. It’d be so nice to have bed of my own & some people to love. This here Heartworm can be treated, but it’s kind of pricey (around $300 they say). So if you’d like to help pay for my treatment, you’d like to foster me during my recovery, or maybe even ADOPT me (!) please contact the Animal Programs team at animalprograms@hamiltonhumane.com or 317-773-4974. Also, if you are 55 or older, I qualify for the PAWS program. How about that!

Nala:“I just got my proofs back from Olin-Mills portrait studio, what do you think?”
I’m going to put this one on my facebook page! I am a red & white Collie/Aussie mix (I think) and I am 5 years old. Back in February 09, a nice man found me and brought me to this shelter. It was the best thing that could have happened because the people here noticed I had a bit of trouble walking and took me to three doctors to find out what was wrong. It seems that I have a condition called hip dysplasia, which means my hips get really sore when I run or walk for long distances. This is something that would have been easier to treat when I was just a little girl. But now I will need surgery to make me better. I promise that I am worth it! I am friendly and smart and I love people! I passed my temperament tests with all A’s. I would be a wonderful addition to a family with kids as long as they were careful not to jostle my hips. You can see that I am a good girl by the smile on my face.

Because it is going to be expensive (approximately $1,000) to treat my hip dysplasia, if you would like to contribute funds to pay for surgery, would like to foster me during my recovery and maybe even adopt me (paws crossed), please contact the Animal Programs Team at animalprograms@ hamiltonhumane.com or 317-773-4974. Also, if you are 55 or older, I qualify for the PAWS program.

*Donations received over the amount needed to help this pet will go toward our Survivor Program Medical Fund which helps other animals with special medical needs and those in need of emergency care.

CHLOE: She has had a hard knock life, just like Orphan Annie!

This pretty little girl is 4 1 ½ years old and has probably been on her own for some time now. She has “flying nun” ears and a dark brown coat; she is mostly Lab with a little mystery dog mixed in. We can only guess at the life she has led, but we doubt that she has known much love. Her first response to new people is to be shy. It is so sad knowing that strays like Chloe have been given reason not to trust we humans, but with Chloe, she warms up quickly and eventually works her way close to your chest where she can rest her head for a moment of peace and security.

You can see in her sweet face that Chloe would love to learn how to be a treasured pet. She arrived here on February 10 and our medical check up revealed that she is heartworm positive. This is a potentially fatal disease unless she can receive heartworm treatment. We would like to find a foster home for Chloe where she can take her treatment and recover in a quiet calm environment. If you are interested in sponsoring Chloe’s medical expenses or would like to become her foster parent, please contact the Animal Programs Team at 317-774-1236 or email animalprograms@hamiltonhumane.com. Chloe would love to live in a quiet low key kind of home. She deserves to find her own “Daddy Warbucks”!

My Name is Darcey….and yes, those are my 2 bottom canines.

I’ve always been a bit sensitive about my teeth….my teen years were horrible with prom and those cheerleading tryouts that didn’t quite go so well (seriously, who knew how hard it would be to say “I’ve got spirit, yes I do, I’ve got spirit, how ‘bout you” with protruding canines!). But since I’ve arrived here, I’ve got a new-found appreciation for my special choppers. You see, I’ve overheard the staff here talking about how “adorable” my smile is. Because my 2 bottom teeth stick out, my upper lip gets stuck over them giving me a “super cute” (their words) grin. I’ve also heard them talking about how I like to roll over on my back to scratch it on the ground while kicking my back legs out, the left, then the right, the left, then the right again…..as if I were doing canine Pilates. These humans here can’t keep their hands off my belly when I do it. They’re putty in my paws!

So, that’s just a sample of the sheer delight I can bring into your life. I cuddle…a lot. I love kids and some dogs are okay…it just depends on the dog. I’m an older girl, around 7 years old they guestimate, but I’m still full of energy. I LOVE to go on walks and wag my nub at everyone who stops by. My nub you ask? Well, they think I’m part Cattle Dog with some Terrier mixed in. I have a brindl-ey coat and I enjoy my treats. I’m a PAWS pet, so my fee is just $45 if you’re 55 years or older…I can be keeping your feet warm…making you laugh…and leading you and the family with poorly enunciated cheers if you just take a few minutes stop by and see me. I know you’ll love me. I just know it. Thanks, Darcey.

Tenoch—“Ya got quite a flash on that camera, lady!”

Tenoch was a very good subject for his photo shoot.
It was hard to choose a photo for his profile because he is so darn handsome with that big head and smile that goes from ear to ear.

Tenoch is a neutered, 1 year old American Staffordshire Terrier who is the epitome of happy-go-lucky. He is playful and energetic like most puppies, but he is also a big boy who isn't quite done growing. Yes, Tenoch will get even bigger than what he is now. He’s a little tank really…but well mannered and very intelligent. He knows the commands "sit" and "down" and isn’t far from learning shake. As long as he finds a family who is consistent with his training, he will certainly be a gentle giant.

Tenoch arrived at the shelter when his previous owner moved and didn't take him with them. They did tell us he is housetrained and good with children. He is an absolutely beautiful specimen of bully breed love!

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt this pet.

My name is Tyko…and I am a Wag-a-holic.

No really, he is! Tyko is such an incredibly happy boy, that he wags his tail with such ferocity that it beats against the kennel walls causing the end of his tail to bleed. The official scientific term for this is “Happy Tail.” So, it’s not uncommon to see Mr. Tyko sporting an e-collar when you visit him so we can keep his tail bandaged. He can’t help it…he LOVES people so much that he cannot contain his enthusiasm when they pass by. He is the ultimate lap dog, wiggling his way into not only your lap, but your heart within seconds of meeting him. My heavens just look at those big brown eyes…that smile…he is the picture of what it means to be man’s best friend. It’s all he really wants…to be someone’s best friend.

Tyko is a 3 year old Lab/Pit Bull Mix found as a stray. Hard to believe he went unclaimed…because I know someone is missing this dog. He knows his “sit” command and loves treats. He’s a bit of clown and seems to like most other dogs. Tyko appears to be housetrained too as he does his best to “hold it” until someone can take him outside to potty. He’s really not a large dog….his body hasn’t quite caught up to his head which we think makes him even more adorable. Tyko does not like cats…so his home must be feline free, and we are currently working with him on his desire to protect his toys. This is called resource guarding, and even though through training it can be addressed, we do recommend a home for him without children under the age of 16.

You must be at least 21 years old to adopt Tyko.

Winnie: “Does anyone have some sunscreen I can borrow?”

You know, we platinum blondes have to be careful in the sun.
With my fair skin, I burn so easily! I was living with someone when suddenly, they were gone and I was abandoned! The nice Animal Control Officer picked me up and took me to this place on March 21, 09. I don’t mind telling you I was relieved—I was getting pretty hungry and lonely. I’m only 6 months old which is too young to be on my own. I have lots of energy and since coming here I’ve discovered TOYS! I just love them! I hate to let go of them in case I never get them back again. Someone said I would be the right age to start puppy classes to learn how to listen and follow directions, finger paint & make egg carton caterpillars. It’s just so hard to sit still; I get excited just thinking of going outside for a walk or to play with someone. I am a very sociable girl, outgoing and friendly, but I don’t always know my own strength. So until I learn my manners, I probably need to live in a family with 4th graders or older. (I might knock over little kids trying to play with them) You must be 21 to adopt me. Now..how about that SPF 30?

Hey there Delilah

Hey there Delilah
What's it like in Hamilton County?
I'm a thousand miles away
But girl, you look so pretty
Yes you do
Noblesville Square can't shine as bright as you
I swear it's true

Hey there Delilah
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm on my way so don’t get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice, it's my disguise
I'm by your side

Hey there Delilah
I know times are getting hard
But just believe me, girl
Today I'll pay the adoption fee with my card
We'll have it good
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good

Hey there Delilah
I've got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would make you feel okay
I'd write it all
Even more time we’d have to play ball
We'd have it all

Hey there Delilah
You be good and don’t you miss me
Two more hours and you'll be in a doggie pool
And I'll be taking pictures like I do
You'll know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
Hey there Delilah here's to you
This one's for you –Adapted by Deena Crouch

Delilah has really had a rough start to life. She was lost and found by one of our staff on March 22. Only 2 years old, this blonde & white Pit Bull girl came to us with multiple injuries, bite wounds, ulcerated paws and ear infections. It looks as if she has had a litter of pups at some time. This poor little girl certainly has no reason to trust humans, but she still does! She is friendly and interested in play. Delilah scored an A on her tempera-ment test. We did learn that she looks upon cats as a possible chew toy, so no cats for Delilah! You must be 21 to adopt her.
This pretty girl deserves so much more from life than what she has experienced. So maybe you could be the one who sings the song in Delilah’s heart.

A dog owns nothing, yet is seldom dissatisfied. Irish proverb

Meet McKayla; certainly a dog with nothing to her name, yet everything to give.
She arrived at the shelter on March 27, as a lost dog that no one ever came to claim. This petite American Staffordshire terrier mix is about 2 years old and has a warm chocolate coat with white markings. She has gorgeous auburn eyes and the cutest ½ flap ears. McKayla has a wonderful personality; she’s open & friendly with great social skills. She just loves walks and visiting with people. She scored all A’s on her temperament tests, which means she would make a great family dog. It is hard to understand how she was left to fend for herself in this big dangerous world. McKayla was not spayed when she first arrived, but we made sure to take care of this while she was with us.

You must be 21 to adopt this sweet girl. We know that she will make a wonderful addition to any household. It won’t take much to make McKayla a very satisfied girl.
Taylor: “Honey, are we almost finished shopping? There’s a game on!”

Believe me, I’ll put up with carrying the bags at the shopping mall. I’ll even stand by the dressing room to get you another size. But I draw the line at holding your purse. Geez, I’m a guy already! I’m a 5 year old red nosed Pit Bull terrier who is in touch with my feminine side, but there are some things I just won’t do. I arrived at the HSHC on March 23 after being picked up in Carmel while I was just trying to get a mocha-chino at McDonalds. Anyway, the food and lodging here is ok. I would prefer a comfy queen sized bed and cable TV, but what can you do. I have been neutered and I’m told that I have a calm, easy going personality. I aced all the temperament tests they threw at me: straight A’s! You know when a guy reaches the prime of his life; he knows the ropes about being a good family member. I take treats nicely, am happy to share my food bowl & I just love hanging out with people! Because I am a fairly good sized canine, I might be a bit too much for a little tyke to handle; but kids 10 or older would make great playmates.

I’m not open to sharing my space with other family pets…humans are fine…but I want to be the only canine in the home. I’m all you need baby!
If you like watching the game on the tube, kickin’ back with some beef jerky and an easy chair, I’m your man. If you’re up for a run in the park or a long hike in the woods, sign me up! If you need me to hold your purse while any of these activities are in progress…well, fine. I’ll do that too if it means getting a good home.

P.S. Hey, I forgot, if you are 55 + up, my adoption fee is just $45! You must be 21 to adopt me.

I am staying with our friends at First Friend K-9 Training located at 12401 Reynolds Drive in Fishers. To visit with me, please call 317-842-4199 for an appointment.

Roxy—“What do you mean ‘smile’? I AM smiling!

You can’t tell from my picture, but I am really splitting my sides laughing! I am a Redbone Coonhound and my face just always looks like I lost my best friend. The funny thing is, in a way, I have. I was brought to this shelter in May by my family. They didn’t want me anymore even though I have lived with them all my life.

And then, just a few months ago, I was adopted. I thought my days of feeling abandoned were over. But here I am again…brought here because of a “change in employment.” So if I look sad, it’s because I am. It’s kind of hard when you are 5 years old to be in a strange place with so many new noises and smells.

The nice people here say I have very soulful eyes, a silky soft coat and that I am very intelligent. I don’t want to brag, but I am house trained and know several commands. I’ve been spayed, whatever that means. Keep in mind that I’m no little purse sized froufrou dog; I’m a big girl, or as I like to say, big-boned. But I love to be hugged and loved. Because I am so big, I would be best suited to a family with older kids, at least 10 years old. I also qualify for the PAWS program.

But I do have one request…if you are going to give me a home…please, please this time make it forever.

Erin: “I have to shop at the tall girls’ store, ‘cause my jeans are flooding!”

Hi there! I am a 4 year old Great Dane mix with a bit of a sassy flair.
My coat is a combination of cinnamon, white & some black on my muzzle. I have lived with my family for 4 years until they surrendered me to the shelter on March 16th 09. They said that they did not have the time or a big enough back yard to keep me. I am an intelligent lady; I know the commands “sit”, “down”, and I am learning “speak”. I used to live with kids, cats & dogs so I’m pretty flexible. I admit that I am not so good at hosting dinner parties and prefer to be left alone when dining. Now, I can be reserved with new people. But give me enough time and patience and I will be as sweet as can be. After all, I spent my whole life with one family and coming here was a big shock. It’s noisy and filled with dogs and thousands of strange smells. If you like a girl with long legs and natural charm, then come visit me. I know I will feel like a new woman if I can just find a forever home. By the way, does Wal-Mart sell extra long jeans? Gotta watch my pennies you know.

Princess—A Cautionary Tail

This little cutie-pie was a lost puppy in August 07 when she was brought to the HSHC. She was a big hit with everyone. She was a brindle & white Pit Bull terrier mix, with possibly a bit of Bull terrier (Spuds McKenzie) thrown in for good measure. Hope had families competing for the right to adopt her! Hope went to her new family & spent just over a year with them. Sadly, on April 14, 09, her owners surrendered Hope, now renamed Princess, to the shelter. The reason given was that Princess did not get along with the other animals in the home. I speculate that the reasons were more complicated. An adorable puppy melts hearts. Sometimes this results in impulsive adopting. Unless a person is willing to commit to training and socializing a puppy, they may end up with an adult dog that disappoints them. This is NOT the dog’s fault. Hope needed to be taught to get along with everyone while she was still a little girl. A dog is a lifelong commitment of time, work and love, and what they turn out to be is entirely up to you. (Exiting soap box…)

Princess is 1 year 10 months old and a shameless flirt as evidenced by her photo! If you are a human being, Princess is just as sweet and affectionate as a girl can be. However, due to a lack of socialization and obedience training, she is not good with other dogs and is especially stressed in this environment. So now, poor Princess sits in a shelter yet again…through no fault of her own, waiting for someone who has the strong leadership skills to help her learn how to behave around other dogs. It IS possible to teach an “old dog” new tricks. For now, we believe Princess is best suited in a home where she is the only pet until someone can work with her on her socialization. She should also be with kids strong enough to handle her size energy level. You must be 21 to adopt Princess…and she asks that this time, it’s forever.

Naomi: “Hey, I was looking for Clay Terrace when I was picked up!”

I was on my way to do a little shopping, when I was picked up by this AC officer and brought to this little B&B.
Nice breakfast by the way, but you have to share the bathroom facilities. My age? Well if you must know, I just turned 1. Yes this is my natural hair color, sort of a brunette with platinum highlights and freckles on my chest and feet. Mom was a Pit Bull and Dad was a traveling man, possibly a Border Collie, but Mom doesn’t talk about him. Yes, I have plenty of energy. I am a fixture at the gym: pilates, spin class, water aerobics-- you name it. Got to keep my girlish figure you know. Listen, I’m a social girl, love to party and do spa days, but I like having my way. I admit it, I am a bit pushy but I know what I like and I want people to snap to it. I’ve been told that I need to learn some manners and become more of a follower. I’m ok with that, but just don’t turn me into one of those meek little wall flowers. I need to strut my stuff, you know? I have a lot of personality, always ready to play, and a real social butterfly. Do you know the Taco Bell Chihuahua? He’s a personal friend of mine. Oh before I forget, I really need a home where the kids are old enough to give me my “me time”. Little humans just don’t get it. I need an owner who is 21 or older—so we can go clubbing!
What’s black & white & pink all over? Yep, that would be BILLY!

Hey there everybody! My name’s Billy, what’s yours? I’m 10 months old!
Almost a 1 year old big boy! I am so excited to be here at this HSHC place. Everyone is so nice to me, and I have my own bed and plenty of food! They say that I’m too skinny so they want me to eat up. Well, come and see me ok? I love company!

This handsome American Staffordshire Terrier is only about 10 months old and he is just as cute and spotted as he can be. Couldn’t you just kiss that pink nose? The tragic thing about what should have been a happy life is that Billy was unloved and neglected. He was found as a stray 2 times, once in Dec. 08 and again in Feb. 09. We returned him to his owner both times but on Mar. 21, he was seized by an Animal Control Officer due to suspected abuse. It’s hard to believe that Billy has not lost his zest for life or his faith in human beings. He is still young and his personality is very positive. His temperament tests all indicated that he is a very good boy, gentle, sociable, and ready to play.

He is being cared for in a foster home to make sure he gets plenty of loving attention. He has never been a treasured pet so this is bound to be the best place for him right now. If you are interested in adopting Billy, please contact our shelter at 317-773-4974 or send an email to animalprograms@hamiltonhumane.com. You must be at least 21 to adopt Billy.
CONNER: I guess I waited too long and all the girls are taken…

By his doleful expression, you can tell that Conner is hoping someone will agree to go to the prom with him.
I would, but I’m married. He is such a handsome, friendly and sweet natured guy, any girl would be lucky to have him on her arm. He’s only 2 years old, but he’s very mature. He came to the HSHC on April 19 because his owner, who had only had him for a month couldn’t keep him any longer. She had found him as a stray. But just because he’s new to the school, he’s made lots of friends. He is on the honor roll—he passed all his temperament tests with A’s. He went out for track, cross country and the tennis team. He’s been voted “dog most likely to succeed in being a family pet”. He is so good looking; all tan and cream Pit Bull/Retriever mix and that cute red nose, but he doesn’t know it! Not a bit conceited, Conner would just like to be someone’s best friend. While he was at the nurse’s office he got neutered—so he will behave himself at the prom. If you would like to have a date with Conner, you must be 21. But he would really like to go steady, so only people with plans for a permanent relationship should agree to visit with Conner.
Rogue: “My name means playful & mischievous, NOT scoundrel!”

Our little Rogue is definitely not a scoundrel.
She is a 4 year old petite blend of terrier and (I think) Doberman. Yes she has the black & tan of a Rottweiler, but Dobies are that color too. She has Dobie ears. But she is way too small to be either a Rottie or a Dobie. Just look at her shiny black coat and big brown eyes. She is a perfect size for a smaller home or even an apartment.

Rogue was picked up by an Animal Control Officer on March 23, 09 because she was lost and roaming near the highway. She had never been spayed and she came in with a bad urinary tract infection. After some medication and TLC, Rogue is feeling fine and is more than ready to find her new family. On her temperament tests, Rogue scored all A’s which means she would make an excellent family pet and she especially enjoys the company of little people. This friendly, outgoing girl is very gentle when taking treats. She will undoubtedly win your heart if you give her a chance.
You must be at least 21 to adopt Rogue.
Dexter—“I just want to go home.”

My name is Dexter, and I am an 8 year old Lhasa Opsa. My family dropped me off here when they decided to move without me. It was a tough pill to swallow, being with them for 8 long years, and then being left here to fend for myself. I was not in very good shape when I arrived. My skin was very dry and irritated and my coat was matted. With hindsight being 20/20, I suppose all things do happen for a reason, because the nice people here took care of my skin issues and now my coat has grown in very nicely. I’m more handsome than ever. The vet did recently discover I’ve got a bum knee that may become arthritic over time, but hey, it happens to all of us. Nobody’s perfect!

I am neutered and I love to be held. I’m the proverbial lap dog and I have a distinguished under bite the ladies here refer to as being “absolutely adorable.” I give very good kisses and am both crate and housetrained…but….I do like to protect my food bowl. I’m not going lie, I enjoy my food, so once you give it to me, you best let me finish it! Don’t play games with my emotions when it comes to dinner-time! For that reason, and the fact I’m a middle-aged guy who is long past the puppy stage, I need to be in an adult-only home.

So, what do you think? Am I worth a trip to the Humane Society. Am I worth a second chance to live out my life with someone to love and who loves me? I hope so… I’ll be waiting.

Dexter qualifies for the PAWS Program, so if you’re 55 years or older, his adoption fee is only $45

Blossom: “How do you feel about partially pink noses?”

Well if that’s not your cup of tea, how about brown eyeliner all around my big brown eyes? Hey, look at my cute flappy ears! C’mon, there must be something you like about me ‘cause I’m a “keeper”! I am a 1 year old girl Pit Bull mix, only 36 pounds, with a fawn and white coat. I was lost in Fishers when someone picked me up and brought me to the shelter on April 11, 09. I can’t remember where I came from, but I’d been searching for a safe place to stay. Thank goodness they brought me here! I am a very sweet dog, ask anyone. I got all A’s on my temperament tests, which means I am friendly, social, playful, gentle and smart! I can roll over, sit & shake!! I love people and cuddling and going for a walk and playing ball and…anything you would like to do. Just give me a chance. I just might be too much for a little child to handle ‘cause I am pretty strong. Hey I know….check out the nifty white line between my eyes; super cute huh? I know I am going to win you over when you see me in person. I’ll be waiting.

Because I am what they call a “bully breed” you have to be 21 to adopt me.

Adanya: My name means “my father’s daughter” and I AM!

My dad was a Rottweiler and my mom was a Rottweiler and so am I
. I am 5 years old and showed up at this establishment on April 17, 09. I had been hitchhiking and having no luck until an Animal Control Officer picked me up and brought me to the shelter. It’s a good thing because I was tired and hungry. I am a very playful girl by nature and I just LOVE toys. I don’t understand this whole concept of allowing someone to take the toy away or to mess with my food, but I gather that this is considered bad form. I guess I need to work on this with my new family. Even though I am considered a senior citizen, I sure don’t look or act like it. My main pleasure in life is playing. I probably should not move in with a family with young kids, as I might accidently knock one over in my enthusiasm! You need to be 21 to adopt me and it would help if you were an experienced dog owner, since I need some lessons in etiquette. I qualify for the PAWS program!
Ballard “Look what I can do!” (he turns in a circle, Ta-Dah!)

Talk about your little puppy in a big dog body! Ballard is about a year and a half old and is all pup, all the time.
He is a Blue Tick Coon Hound and has the ears to prove it. Ballard does not know that he is not a miniature poodle so he likes to jump up on any available human and give big sloppy kisses. Sadly, Ballard came from a neglectful home and was very skinny and dirty when he arrived. He was seized by an Animal Control Officer. Keep in mind that Ballard has lived his whole life outside and has never had a lick of training. If you show him a leash, he might think it is a rawhide treat. So this sweet natured boy is simply uneducated. He means well and would probably be willing to learn in order to please his new owner. Ballard loves to play with his blanket and he enjoys “singing” to express himself. He hates taking a bath (but so do most little boys). He might be a bit too energetic and rambunctious to do well with children under 5 years old. He could bowl them over with one big kiss! But if you are strong enough to withstand his affectionate embraces, he would make a wonderful companion. Hounds have excellent noses and Ballard would require a fenced in yard to keep him at home.
Chica: Ok, so my name means “small one”….hmmm, what’s up with that?

I haven’t been “small” since I was an 8 week old puppy!
I am happy to talk with you, but I’m a busy woman so let’s cut to the chase. I am a 6 year old Rottweiler with the official black and tan coloring. My tail has been docked. My previous owner had me spayed when I was younger; but this was a while ago and I don’t even remember who my owner was. I was walking along a road in Noblesville in late March ’09, when an Animal Control Officer picked me up. He felt I should be living in a shelter rather than fending for myself in traffic. It was fine by me: I prefer a soft bed to the hard dirt.

Being an older gal, I don’t take to change very well. I really enjoy having attention, but on my own terms. I prefer to eat alone and I enjoy chewing a bone or toy by myself. I can get pretty grumpy when I am interrupted while dining or playing. It’s just the way things are when you are up in years and accustomed to leading a solitary life. I do have my out-going, hospitable moments, but only after a Venti Caramel Macchiato. I want an experienced dog owner who knows how to handle independent types. I would prefer a home with mature teenagers rather than children. You must be 21 to adopt me. I qualify for the PAWS program, so I am a bargain if you’re 55!
Dina: I wish I had a confident boyfriend….

Hello. My name is Dina and I am a 2 year old B&W Lab mix with cute pointy ears.
I first moved into the HSHC on March 7, 09 when a nice lady brought me here after finding me in Noblesville. I was a bit shy at first but I got used to the people and dogs and smells here. Then on May 21st I got adopted! Hoo-ray! I wish I could say that that was my happy ending. However, after only one day he brought me back. He had a young male dog that was super shy and submissive…and I guess I was just too dominant and energetic for him. But hey, it takes more than a day for dogs to get use to each other or I think he and I could have come to an understanding.
Anyway, I passed all my temperament tests with straight A’s and everyone here knows that I am a good girl. I am smart and very social. I need a playmate who likes to…well, play! Running, chasing, wrestling and giving each other wedgies are all my kind of fun. None of this “sitting on the rug in my pink tutu” for this gal. Please come see me soon…I’m ready to rumble!
NALA: “Pretty in Pink” is my favorite movie!

I’ve been told that I look a little like Molly Ringwald, probably because I have red hair. Of course I am also a platinum blond with brown eyes.
I am a 3 year old American Staffordshire girl who arrived at this place on April 17th because I was lost, couldn’t remember my address & my Blackberry was dead. I am truly a social butterfly and enjoy anything that involves human beings, salsa & chips and having fun! I have been spayed—I found that being a mom takes too much time away from clubbing. I am outgoing and energetic with a winning personality.
As CAH-razy as I am about humans, I am not fond of other dogs. I just hate to share the lime light with other pets. Might as well be honest as long as we’re talking about me moving in with you! Otherwise, I am easy going and agreeable and very interested in discussing living arrangements. I prefer being as close to my owners as possible. We can negotiate positioning on chairs, beds & couches when I move in. Do you have a DVD player? I’d like to bring my Molly Ringwald movie collection if that’s all right with you. Now for some reason I can only move in with you if you are 21 or older. I don’t understand this whole brouhaha regarding Bully Breeds. I am a cream puff of a dog! Be sure to ask for me at the desk; I’m usually in (unless I’m at the spa).
Beauty—“Beautiful inside and out.”

Beauty came to us when her owner could no longer keep her.
She is a spayed, 2 year old Pit Bull Terrier mix who is very petite and sweet. Beauty was so frightened here that our friends at Dog Dayz offered house her there in a less stressful environment and help her overcome her fear of new things. Beauty is doing so well with her socialization and training at Dog Dayz. She is playing well with other dogs and is ready to finally find a forever home.

The beautiful thing about Beauty (other than her silky black coat, big bat ears, soulful brown eyes and freckled chest), is that once you have broken through her wall, she is your friend for life. Beauty immediately becomes a lap dog with endless kisses to share and a gratefulness that pours from her eyes as if to say, “thank you so much for not giving up on me…I just needed to know I could trust you.”

Beauty is staying with our friends at Dog Dayz located at 15310 Herriman Blvd in Noblesville just north of 146th Street and SR 37. If you are interested in adopting Beauty, please email hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com or call 317-773-4500!

Mickey: I think I have had one too many cappuccinos…..

The name’s Mickey and I arrived here with my sister Minnie on November 10th ‘08.
We had been lost for who knows how long and were trying to find a warm place to sleep. We were happy to be brought to the shelter, but it made me pretty jumpy and nervous. I got adopted on January 5th 09 and lived with my new owner for 5 months, until she returned me to HSHC on June 4th. She said I was too much for her to handle. Sooo here I am again. There are too many strange smells and noises in this place and we Beagles experience the world through our noses! I am a 3+ years old tricolor Beagle and it’s hard to remember where we came from originally. The first time I was here they made sure I was neutered. To tell you the truth I go back and forth between feeling so scared I just want to curl up in the corner and close my eyes or wanting to jump around my kennel like a wild man. The folks here say that I have never been properly socialized and that I am just very fearful with a lot of energy. That leash thingy scares me to death!! What is that all about? All I know is I just want to get out of here find a nice soft bed and try to calm down. I would like to learn how to be what they call a “pet”. I hear that that is a wonderful life! And keep me away from the Starbucks!
Domino: They named the sugar after me!

You won’t believe all I have been through in my short life.
I am almost 2 years old and I have been passed around more than a collection plate! Back in December of 07 when I was just a little tyke I got lost. The HSHC returned me to my owner and I stayed with him for a year. In December 08, he decided to surrender me to the shelter. I sat here for a bit until I was adopted again on Dec. 27 08. I breathed a sigh of relief and settled into my new family. I really liked those children. But on May 24, 09 my mistress brought me back to the shelter because they could not afford to keep me any longer. So here I am again, scared and sad and wishing I could find my forever home. I am a very good girl; I got all A’s on my report card! I am a combination of a black Lab & a Pit Bull and I am not very big. I have already been spayed so I will be able to come home with you today! I would love to be the only pet because I don’t want to have to share my family with any one else. You need to be 21 to adopt me.
Katelyn: “This place is sooo scary and noisy!”

I just finished my interview with Katelyn and she told me to tell everyone that she is ready to leave this place and find a nice home with someone to take care of her.
Katelyn arrived as a little lost girl on May 2, 09. She is just as cute and sweet as she can be and is only 9 months old. She has lovely golden brown and black brindle markings with white on her nose, chest, and some toes. We think she is a mix of Plott Hound and Pit Bull. During our visit she came up to me and gave me lots of kisses. When the dog next to her kennel began to bark, she became agitated and couldn’t relax. But the longer I stroked her the more she settled in and leaned against me. I think she wanted to sit in my lap but every time someone barked, she’d get worried again. Katelyn passed all her temperament tests with A’s. She has lots of puppy energy so it will take puppy training to teach her how to walk on a leash without pulling and other doggie etiquette. This loving girl would make a great pet for an active family. It’s hard on a youngster being in a big noisy kennel. Do you have room in your home and heart for this sweet little girl?
Aubrie: “Don’tcha just love life? I’m so happy just being alive!”

This adorable rusty-red Boxer-Pit Bull mix has got the best attitude.
Even though she was a little lost soul when she arrived on May 3rd 09, this happy girl seems to always wear a big smile. The other surprising fact is that she is 5 years 7 months! You would never know she was not a much younger dog. Aubrie is a very social girl and enjoys everyone she meets (with the exception of cats!). During her temperament testing she seemed to enjoy all the activities. I think she thought she was playing games. Not surprisingly, she scored all A’s. She is also a smart girl; she knows how to “sit” and “shake”. Aubrie has already been spayed and is eager to join her new family for outings, movie-nights, ping-pong tournaments and aerobics classes. Because she is 5+, she qualifies for PAWS. You must be 21 to adopt Aubrie. This “Pollyanna” will bring some sunshine into your life!

Grace, or should we say “Amazing Grace”, is so lucky to be alive.

On June 11, Grace’s owner decided that because she was not turning out to be a good hunter, he would shoot her.
This hunter did not have to kill her; he could have turned her over to a shelter. But he also did not aim very well. Poor Grace was shot in the back of her head and the bullet exited the side of her neck. This did not cause her to die, but it did result in pain, a loss of blood and intermittent neurological difficulties. This beautiful, 11 month old English Coonhound with a red and white coat and red ticking wants nothing more than to rest her head on someone’s lap and be cuddled. Grace is a petite girl who was never spayed. She is gentle and trusting even though her owner betrayed her in the worst way. Just look into her soft brown eyes and you can see that she still has a heart full of love for anyone who will be kind to her. She is currently staying in a foster home to make a full recovery. I am sure her foster family has fallen in love with this pretty dog. She has already forgiven and is well on her way to forgetting the events of June 17. Now it’s time for Grace to start fresh with a new family and the life of a well loved pet. No more guns and hunting for this little lady. If you would like to visit with Grace please contact the Animal Programs Team at 317-774-1263, to arrange a meeting.
